Just recently, we learned that Jared Leto might be up for the lead role in Marvel's Phase Three title Doctor Strange, but news of a potential new role just might negate that possibility. Deadline has word that Leto, fresh of his Best Supporting Actor win at the Academy Awards for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, is in early talks to take the lead role in Brilliance, an adaptation of Marcus Sakey's novel of the same name, scripted by Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp. Previously, Will Smith was supposed to take the role in the film set up at Legendary Pictures and Universal, but he left to lead a football concussion drama. Read on!
Should a deal be finalized, Leto would join Noomi Rapace, who is still attached as the female lead. For those just joining us, the film follows a federal agent with some kind of superhuman ability that has made him skilled at capturing terrorists. This time he's after another of his own kind, called "brilliants," who is hellbent on starting a civil war. The film would have made a much bigger splash with Will Smith in the lead, but with Jared Leto starring, it wouldn't quite feel like an event film (not to discredit the actor in any way). But maybe this will turn Leto into a viable blockbuster star.

He may not be a huge draw yet but he's a VERY capable actor and people who are fans of his previous roles, as well as 30 Seconds to Mars, will likely flock to theaters. I know I would.

Yeah, the last few Will Smith films have made a "big Splash" you know where. I think you underestimate Leto's extraordinary gift as an actor...and clearly have very little knowledge about the popularity of his band...we're talking about a huge international fan base....millions and millions of fans.. who would gladly pay to see him in anything. The truth is, he could have been a mega-star years ago, but chose the quality of the project over money and fame...He never used his looks to advantage,in fact, tried to hide them as much as he could. If you have some time watch "Requiem for a Dream"... brilliant film..with 3 Oscar winners...Ellen Burstyn, Jenniffer Connelly, and Leto...you might appreciate him more.
