Jessica Chastain & Kristen Wiig Both Circling Roles in 'The Martian'

Now that it's been confirmed that The Martian is director Ridley Scott's next project, it's time for the rest of the cast to be filled out. The story mostly follows a singular lead, an astronaut (Matt Damon) who finds himself stranded on Mars, struggling to survive long enough in order to make it back to Earth, but there are still some supporting roles. Deadline reports Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) are circling two primary female roles, though considering the subject matter, it's likely that they're not meaty lead roles unless the film has changed some elements.
The source notes that talks are early with these two actresses and Chastain actually seems more likely to join the film than Wiig for some reason. Chastain is one of the best actresses working right now and is no stranger to drama, but Wiig is a surprising choice. If she's playing one of the crew members on the mission to Mars, this would be something remarkably different for the "Saturday Night Live" veteran and comedy star. But if Wiig is looking to break out of comedy and take some different roles then more power to her. Drew Goddard adapted the book by Andy Weir and the film is set for release on November 25th, 2015.
