After scoring The Master and There Will Be Blood for director Paul Thomas Anderson, Film Music Reporter (via The Playlist) composer Jonny Greenwood has been called back to provide the score for Anderson's forthcoming adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice. It's just one more fantastic touch to the film that stars Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Jena Malone, Martin Short and Anderson's lovely wife, Maya Rudolph. Greenwood's work is an integral part of what has made Anderson's last two features so memorable alongside the powerhouse lead performances.
Anderson's films are the two biggest projects Greenwood has worked on as a composer, but of course, everyone is much more familiar with his work as part of the band Radiohead. Greenwood hasn't be recognized by Oscar for his composing skills, but he did receive the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for his work on There Will Be Blood. Maybe this time around Greenwood will get the attention of the Academy with his score. We'll find out when the film premieres sometime later this year, likely at Cannes Film Festival.
