Kicking Off 2014: What New Release Are You Planning to See First?
by Alex Billington
January 2, 2014
Welcome to 2014. Welcome to another 365 364 days of movies. What will this year have in store for us? What movies we will love, what movies will we hate? To kick things off, I jumped on Twitter on New Years Day 2014 to ask everyone about the first movie they would watch this year, and then the first release they're excited to see. The responses included a few of the expected (Captain America 2, Jack Ryan, Monuments Men, RoboCop) but also plenty of others (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Raid 2, Noah). We've collected most of the tweets for a look at which upcoming early 2014 releases our followers are anticipating the most.
Below are the top responses, organized by movie and release date. Most of these are expect but it was Spike Jonze's Her, finally opening in wide release, which topped the list. To open, my tweet asking for responses:
Now that we're in 2014 - what's the very first movie you're watching this year? What's the first release you're most excited for?

A few people interpreted the question as what upcoming release they're most excited for in 2014. These two movies are certainly up there, but later releases in the year. Their enthusiastic tweets are still worth sharing:
Guardians of the Galaxy - August 1st:
@firstshowing Guardians of the Galaxy. Let's GOOOO.
— Nick Bleeker (@Bleekster) January 1, 2014
Interstellar - November 7th:
@firstshowing i've just seen Enough Said. Really liked it. Most looking forward to interstellar 🙂

That's pretty much all of the responses direct from Twitter. I'm glad to see such a diverse range of movies mentioned, though there's plenty more coming up in the next few months that I'm excited to see. Not only Jason Reitman's Labor Day (in wide release) and Teller's doc Tim's Vermeer, but also: The LEGO Movie from Phil Lord & Chris Miller, the time travel found footage film Welcome To Yesterday, Jaume Collet-Serra's Non-Stop with Liam Neeson, Jude Law in the comedy Dom Hemingway, and cinematographer Wally Pfister's feature directing debut Transcendence featuring Johnny Depp. Plenty to look forward to in 2014. Thank you to everyone on Twitter who replied with an answer. Keep watching new movies every day!
Are there any films missing? Chime in below! What's the first release you're most excited for?

Monuments Men. As a side note I really like this debate style post on FS, it's a nice hero moment for the Tweets answering your own and lets you guys still maintain quality control. More of this please 🙂

Early reviews are suggesting that Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones could be decent so that will be the first movie I see in 2014. But the first movies I am genuinely excited for in 2014 come out the same day: Monuments Men and the Legos Movie. Hope both live up to my expectations.

whereas the RoboCop reboot has left me cold and disinterested, Gareth Edwards' Godzilla is the obvious one for me, i loved the teaser. i have to agree with many others in that Her and Interstellar are probably my two other most anticipated at the moment. Transcendence could be great or a failure, we've no idea at the moment. i'm also really looking forward to Laika's new film The Boxtrolls, Only Lovers Left Alive, Jodorowsky's Dune, Jupiter Ascending, and despite the logline i really want to see Sharlto Copley in Open Grave.
