Marvel's 'Ant-Man' Begins Production, Adds Judy Greer & More to Cast

Ant-Man

It's been a long road for Marvel's adaptation of their comic book Ant-Man. For over 10 years Shaun of the Dead writer and director Edgar Wright had developed the film for Marvel with Attack the Block writer and director Joe Cornish helping him out. Wright was officially attached to direct the film in 2006, and spent the years since getting the film together, adapting as Marvel began to build their cinematic universe beginning with Iron Man and leading up to The Avengers. The universe continues to grow with films like Guardians of the Galaxy, and sadly things at Marvel got too complicated for Wright as he and the studio disagreed over the direction of the film, and he dropped out. But Marvel decide to march onward. Read on!

Now it's Yes Man director Peyton Reed at the helm, and he just tweeted today:

And Marvel sent out a press release announcing production with this official synopsis:

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Paul Rudd is playing Scott Lang and Michael Douglas plays Dr. Hank Pym with Evangeline Lilly as his daughter Hope Van Dyne. In addition, the press release also confirmed and expanded the supporting cast that includes Corey Stoll ("House of Cards"), Bobby Cannavale (Annie, Win Win), Michael Pena (End of Watch), Judy Greer ("Arrested Development," Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Abby Ryder Fortson ("Togetherness"), Wood Harris (Remember the Titans), David Dastmalchian (The Dark Knight, Prisoners), Gregg Turkington (The Comedy) and rapper turned actor T.I. of Takers.

No word on who these actors will be playing, with the exception of Corey Stoll taking the villain role of a business executive who will become the comic book villain Yellowjacket. However, the press release also notes that "Mad Men" star John Slattery will be part of the cast, and we're pretty sure that he'll be playing Tony Stark's father Howard Stark, just like he did in a film reel in Iron Man 2, who likely has some kind of dealings with Douglas' Hank Pym sometime in the past. Since Stark was responsible for founding S.H.I.E.L.D., maybe Pym has some hand in their activities as well.

Production is beginning in San Francisco, and SlashFilm noticed that On Location Vacations (who keeps track of active film and TV sets shooting on location around the world) report the film is shooting under the cover title of Bigfoot. Production will only be on the west coast for a couple weeks though before moving to Atlanta. Let's hope Peyton Reed hasn't inherited a misstep on behalf of Marvel Studios, and that this will keep the comic book giant on top of their game. Marvel Studios has Ant-Man arriving on July 17th, 2015.

I'm sure Marvel will make sure Ant Man is up to par with the rest of their films....especially since this is an origin story for a character we have not seen yet.

I still wish Marvel would hire Edgar Wright for SOMETHING

It's still his script. Maybe not 100% but the basic storyline still follows his and Cornish' screenplay, Feige has made it clear.

I can dig that. I still wish they'd let him take the reins and direct something. He uses the camera unlike any other director.

Glad the film is back on track 🙂 Now I would like that July 2016 date of Doctor Strange to become official and the main actor playing Strange.

Can Scott Lang grow gigantic as well or is that just Hank Pym? If so I hope they don't just limit Lang to shrinking.

I think they will stick with shrinking for this one. Giant Man might too much for the MCU.

Greg Turkington? Really???

Geez, it will be a small miracle if they can pull this off. I don't this is a good idea. So much damage control.
