As Matthew McConaughey continues his comeback of sorts with a slew of impressive performances, a new project with his talents attached is gaining steam at the American Film Market. Free State of Jones is a civil war drama focusing on the untold and extraordinary story of Newton Knight, who led one of the greatest rebellions of the war. In addition to McConaughey, The Hunger Games and Pleasantville director Gary Ross is attached to the film, and the story has been a passion project for him for years. Now with STX Entertainment looking to finance a big chunk of the movie, it looks like it might finally happen. Read on!
The subject of the film was a Mississippi man who defected from the Confederate Army, ended up banding together with a group of like-minded soldiers, and set out to form their own State known as the Free State Of Jones. Knight would go on to be even more bold by having one of the first well-known mixed race romances in the South as he fell in love with a former slave. Deadline says the hope is for the project to begin shooting early in 2015, and if there's already buzz at the AFM, then it likely won't have any problem securing a release, especially with McConaughey around.

Comeback of sorts indeed. It's not like he had gone away but now he's arguably the biggest actor on the planet.
