by Alex Billington

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…" It's here. It's time. It has been 31 years since we've seen Luke & Leia Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca in a movie, but they're back once again. Disney/Lucasfilm have unveiled the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also know as Episode VII, the continuation of the Jedi story that concluded with the destruction of the Death Star at the end of Return of the Jedi. It starts with a shot of John Boyega and has a glimpse of the Millennium Falcon. From there? Well. This is what we've all been waiting for, our first glimpse after so many secrets. May the Force Be With You.
Along with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, the cast includes Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Adam Driver, Warwick Davis and Peter Mayhew.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, continuing the beloved original trilogy about Luke, Leia, Han & Chewie that ended in 1983, is directed by J.J. Abrams, of the films Mission: Impossible 3, Star Trek, Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness. The screenplay is written by Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi, The Big Chill, The Bodyguard) and J.J. Abrams, with Kathleen Kennedy from Lucasfilm producing. This debut is the beginning of a brand new saga, with another trilogy planned for this storyline, not to mention other standalone movies in this universe. Disney, after acquiring Lucasfilm, will release Star Wars: The Force Awakens in theaters worldwide on December 18th, 2015.
Is this everything you were hoping for from the first teaser? Are you excited for the return of Star Wars?

I dont know why everyones crying about the flares. I think they're cool. People with sensitive eyes need to watch something else that doesnt include CG.

The lens flares are really cool looking. I guess the "issue" is that JJ LOVES the lens flares and uses them way too much. I don't think he does it consciously either. There are literally 721 lens flares in the first Star Trek movie and 826 lens flares in "Into Darkness". That's a shitload of lens flares.
TheOct8pus on Dec 1, 2014
9
Yep, i dont mind them but even hes has admitted that its getting out of hand. He could get away with it in Star Trek because he was bringing star trek to a whole new generation. whereas star wars has avid fans of all ages and he simply cant fuck around with it. Id be okay with a few lightsaber lens flares.

I'm thinking there will be a different trailer shown in the theater this weekend. As much as I loved the few glimpses we had and the tone is amazing, I want to see shots of the original trilogy characters and I'm betting the trailer in the theater will deliver that.

Boyega's character is a stormtrooper that goes AWOL after his squad brutally attacks a village during a night raid. In the trailer, that's his squad landing in the dropship. When he tries to protect an innocent villager, he is court martialed for treason and has to flee into the desert.

I can't stand how the Sith or dark side characters are portrayed. "That guy's bad because he's wearing black!" We don't know if the character in black is anything. Light saber color is just based upon crystal's not the type character.
redtie on Nov 28, 2014
55
Well. Star Wars has allways had very clear good vs bad theme with easily identifiable sides. Witch works nice in this sort of fairytales. If he has red light saber, you know his bad news. And his stance lacks honor and reeks of maleficent, he's def a sith.

I also enjoyed seeing an old friend in the Falcon. I'm also fully prepared to laugh at all the story-line rumors and speculation that will rise from this teaser that will later be false. I will also snicker at the hundreds of hours people will put into a frame by frame analysis searching for eater eggs that don't exist and evaluating what's happening in the background of every shot. Unfortunately what it demonstrates is 'coolness' over practicality. The makers are clearly more interested in securing ooohs and aaahs from the hordes of zealous fans rather than telling a decent cohesive yarn. Forget that it doesn't make sense, just look how cool it looks. No different really than obliterating your view with ridiculous lens flare or tiresome shakey cam. Sizzle over substance.

136
What I know is what I feel. And that's what a trailer does, elicit an emotive response to encourage you to see something based on what you've seen or at least form an opinion on whether you want to see it. Given the director's previous usage of lens flare and shakey cam and use of cool stuff to paper over a weak story (a la Star Trek) I believe I'm forming an opinion with a solid agenda. Just as the trailer obtained a reaction that encourages you to piss your pants and swoop on others who dare voice an opinion counter to yours.

If hilts got in the way of people using swords, they wouldn't have been built that way for hundreds of years. They are designed for blocking so I'm sure we'll see that in this Sith's style of combat.
David Diaz on Dec 1, 2014

Yeh, but when a steel quillon clips your fore arm during a swing or twirl, your arm is not cleaved and cauterized.
Brian Sleider on Dec 2, 2014
143
Yeah but dude, we are talking about a Sith Lord here. They are masters with their weapon. They aren't going to accidentally hurt themselves with it. If that's the case there should be a lot Jedi and Sith with missing limbs from all their light saber use.
David Diaz on Dec 2, 2014
144
This is not a trained force user, IMO, this is a force adept person. In no way a master, a lord only by default. To be clear I think the weapon is sweet and do not mind the cross-guard, AT ALL.
Brian Sleider on Dec 2, 2014
145
True, probably not a master. But I just figure since every Jedi or Sith create their own lightsaber, he or she included a hilt for a reason. And since it looks like some thought was put into how raw the light looks and sounds, the same thought was put into why the hilt is there, rather than it just looking cool and different.
David Diaz on Dec 2, 2014
146
I hope so as well, I hope JJ didnt just say "well it needs to look cooler than the old ones" (which is does). I think it is a defensive measure to account for poor saber skills.

What's with all the lightsaber hate? Most of the Jedi and the Sith construct their personal lightsabers. Very few just happen to acquire one, but even if they did I'm sure they learn to maintenance it and modify it. Jedi and Sith also train in a variety of fighting styles suitable to them, and they're lightsabers reflect those styles; hell they even enhance those styles. Basically, don't sweat over this Sith guy here because trust me, he knows how to use that lightsaber.

Ugh. Sickening. Strange that you don't really notice until it's an IP close to your heart.

Watch it again. There's a major lens flare during the Millennium Falcon barrel roll scene...

I find it funny that people are giving the trailer bad comments. IT'S A TEASER. Don't get your panties in a bunch. The movie won't come out till a year and they'll have plenty on trailers to come out.

I cannot get over how corny the first 2 scenes of the trailer are. The first one is out of a cheese ball horror and the second out of some shitty pixar movie. The rest of the trailer is Mint. I cannot watch the the Dogfight at the end with out smiling and giggling. But the opening.....terrible.
