Octavia Spencer Joins Summit's 2015 'Divergent' Sequel 'Insurgent'
Following an impressive but not mind-blowing worldwide box office pull of over $250 million so far, Divergent is another notch in Lionsgate's young adult adaptation belt to go with The Hunger Games. The sequel Insurgent is already set for release on March 20th, 2015, with Shailene Woodley returning as heroine Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago while on the run with Four (Theo James) and hunted by the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite (Kate Winslet). Now Deadline has word that Octavia Spencer has joined the cast as Johanna, leader of the Amity faction.
Spencer has a role in another sci-fi flick this year in Snowpiercer, and she was just given a role in Las Madres, which will mark her return to comedy for the first time since earning an Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2011 for The Help. Later this year we'll see Spencer in the James Brown biopic Get On Up, so it's clear that the Academy Award win from a few years ago has done her career well. It's not clear if her role in Insurgent is a straight-up ally or maybe antagonist, but Spencer is the first new addition to the aforementioned returning cast. There should be more additions coming soon.
