Paramount Sets a Fast December Release for Chris Rock's 'Top Five'
Just over a week ago, we learned that Paramount Pictures had picked up Top Five, the latest directorial effort from comedian Chris Rock, from the Toronto International Film Festival. While we thought the studio would hold on to the film until 2015, it sounds like they think the film which also stars the "Saturday Night Live" veteran in the lead role, might have some potential to make waves . Deadline reports Paramount has set the film for a limited release on December 5th with a wide release the following week on December 12th. That's definitely a prime awards season release date. Is this Chris Rock's own Annie Hall?
For those who don't know, the film follows Rock, who also wrote the film, as New York City comedian-turned-film star Andre Allen, whose unexpected encounter with a journalist (Rosario Dawson) forces him to confront the comedy career—and the past—that he's left behind. The film also stars Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Cedric The Entertainer, J.B. Smoove, Sherri Shepherd, Anders Holm, Romany Malco, Leslie Jones, Michael Che and Jay Pharoah. There was a lot of buzz for this one at TIFF, and I'm really glad Paramount is releasing it sooner than later.
I hope Paramount gives it plenty of advertising. This movie deserves to be a hit!

I'm really pumped for this, but I'm proceeding with optomistic caution. For every "Annie Hall" there are a dozen "Funny People", with all the hype and all the hope for a smash hit, that ultimately fall flat and leave you thoroughly depressed.

I am very ready to see what Rock brings to the table. Everything I have read says this may be his best work to date.
