After taking on romantic comedy The Proposal and the road trip antics of The Guilt Trip, director Anne Fletcher is heading to action comedy territory. Deadline has word that Fletcher is currently in talks to direct Don't Mess with Texas, a new project at MGM from writers David Feeney & John Quaintance ("New Girl"). In addition, Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are in talks to star in the film which is described as being in the same vein as Midnight Run with Witherspoon taking the lead as a police officer and Vergara playing a prisoner. The two are forced to go on the run together encountering plenty of danger.
Both actresses have been circling the project for awhile, but with Vegara's hiatus this summer from "Modern Family" coming up, the deals are coming together very quickly. Universal originally tried to get it off the ground, but it never came together, which left MGM to pick up the pieces. Witherspoon is also producing the film, so she'll have a hand in how it turns out. These kind of films usually don't team up two women together, but with movies like The Heat, Bridesmaids and more finding great success, hopefully this will pan out. It can't be worse than Witherspoon's turn in This Means War.
