Scarlett Johansson Has an Offer to Lead 'Ghost in the Shell' Instead

Ghost in the Shell / Scarlett Johansson

Though The Wolf of Wall Street and About Time star Margot Robbie was previously reported to be in talks to lead Ghost in the Shell, a live-action adaptation f the iconic Japanese manga of the same name set up at DreamWorks, those talks haven't worked out, and she's no longer linked to the project. However, in a report from Deadline about the actress closing in on a deal to star in Suicide Squad, with Ryan Gosling, Will Smith and Tom Hardy also circling, it's noted that Lucy and The Avengers star Scarlett Johansson now has an offer for $10 million to take the lead role instead. And that sounds like perfect casting. More below!

The only downside is that the role feels a little familiar considering her action work as Black Widow in the Marvel cinematic universe. For those who don't know, Ghost in the Shell follows a female member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. The script comes from William Wheeler (of The Hoax and "The Cape") with Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directing, and with all the love leading ladies are seeing at the box office when it comes to action roles, this could be a big hit, especially with Scarlett Johansson on board. But we'll see if she takes the offer or not. Stay tuned.

Hmmmm, tough to say... She would have to build a different character for Motoko than Black Widow. I would prefer a more unknown actress for this movie.

I wholeheartedly agree. They need a thinner, younger (no offense Scarlet) actress, with a smaller build and a more "neutral" face. After all, Major Kusanagi is a cyborg.

I like Scarlett Johansson, but not to sure about her in this. Ethan, dunno if you saw this before? Quite an interesting take on Ghost in the Shell.

None of the characters in GitS look asian, anyway...

I like Scarlett Johansson in just about any role. I'd love to see her in a GITS movie.

Go with an unknown.

Xerxexx on Oct 17, 2014

Definitely, especially since this is a project that might need to cut some budget from casting to repurpose elsewhere.

Heck no... she wasn't even a good pick for her current role in the avengers. I would have preferred Emily Blunt who couldn't take the role originally because of contracts and time conflicts while she was filming that dumb movie Gulliver...

I'm really getting kind of tired of seeing Johansson. maybe it's just me. I'm hoping we'll get to a point in the Marvel movies where Black Widow can take a step back. It's real hard for me to believe a street level hero can do anything against these cosmic villains we're getting - but that's another topic in general.

This project sounds like a case of averages.
