The Interview

"America, fuck yeah!" After Sony Pictures made the decision last week to pull Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg's latest comedy The Interview from its forthcoming Christmas Day release in theaters, they've decided to send the film out after all. The Wrap reports that Sony is distributing the film in participating theaters as well as VOD on Christmas Day, despite the threats dished out by Guardians of Peace. This comes just after the Art House Convergence, a national coalition of independent movie theaters, petitioned to ask Sony to let them release The Interview for America to see. We're just glad the film is getting released.

Specific details on participating theaters haven't been revealed yet, but here's a couple of tweets:

That's The Plaza Atlanta and Alamo Drafthouse theaters confirmed to have The Interview on Christmas Day, and we're betting there's some more coming soon. As for the VOD release, the streaming service that will be carrying the movie has yet to be revealed, but we're expecting some kind of official press release from Sony later today. We just hope that whoever handles the VOD release can handle the inevitably high traffic that will be coming for the movie after all this controversy turned even more heads than it otherwise would have. We'll be updating below with new information as it becomes available, so stay tuned.

UPDATE: Sony has released a statement from CEO Michael Lynton confirming the release saying:

“We have never given up on releasing 'The Interview' and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day. At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.

I want to thank our talent on 'The Interview' and our employees, who have worked tirelessly through the many challenges we have all faced over the last month. While we hope this is only the first step of the film’s release, we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”

We're still waiting for a list of theaters and plans for the VOD release, so keep checking back for more.

So... publicity stunt? (Sorry, couldn't help myself)

2

Probably. I tought that, too.

Miguel Garay Boszeta on Dec 23, 2014

Naw... those embarrassing leaked emails go far beyond any kind of staged publicity. Along with leaked personal information of their employees and the leaked copies of 4 other movies and also the leaked scripts. If it were a publicity stunt, there wouldn't have been that kind of collateral damage.

Free Yourself on Dec 23, 2014

Yeah, it all of a sudden feels like a pub grab to generate more interest and more revenue, without having to spend more ion advertising. I'm sure it is not the case, but it certainly feels that way.

theslayer5150 on Dec 23, 2014

And in response to the update, Sony saying this is "standing up to those who attempted to suppress free speech", that would have been going forward with releasing it without pulling it first. They gave in to the demands of the "hackers", and now they are giving in to the demands of people who want the movie released. Don't get me wrong, I am glad it is even though I doubt I will see it as it just does not appeal to me as a film, but the "standing up" line in the statement would carry more weight if they had just moved forward to begin with. Then it would have been on the theater chains to decide. Just my opinion.

theslayer5150 on Dec 23, 2014

6

I think you're spot on. Sony has just been leaning whichever way the wind blows. They could blame pulling it from theaters on the big chains, but they obviously didn't check with the smaller theaters before making that decision. Now they've been shamed into releasing it by the public, celebrities and the President. They're just a corporate rag doll.

Swanland on Dec 23, 2014

7

You surely cannot be serious? They didn't even want to pull the movie in the first place. The Theaters did. Then everyone whined and complained, even our own President lamented. So now they are pushing for a limited release and you call that a pub grab? lol. Sony surely can't win either way.

Sascha Dikiciyan on Dec 23, 2014

8

I wasn't being serious. If you read my post again, you will see that it FEELS that way, even though I am sure it is not. It just has a feel of an orchestrated campaign.

Great news!

Nielsen700 on Dec 23, 2014

12

So there are rumors swirling around that North Korea didn't even hack Sony. They're just taking credit for it, so they can squash The Interview....haha! What a debacle. I hope this hurts Sony enough that they'll have to sell Spidey back to Marvel.

TheOct8pus on Dec 23, 2014

Except now Marvel is owned by Disney so...

NK denied it, no?

OfficialJab on Dec 23, 2014

They did officially... but this was before the attack... “Nothing is [a] more serious miscalculation than guessing that just a single movie production company is the target of this counteraction. Our target[s are] all the citadels of the US imperialists who earned the bitterest grudge of all Koreans,” it added. “The army and people of the DPRK are fully ready to stand in confrontation with the US in all war spaces, including cyber warfare to blow up those citadels..."

Considering there is no credible evidence linking North Korea to this hack, buy only the word of the U.S. government. The same government/intelligence apparatus that said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. How much do you trust the integrity and competence of this government? Now look at how many people who say they had no interest in this film are declaring they will go and see it to exercise their freedom. Considering North Korea has never been afraid to make insane threats of nuclear annihilation towards the U.S. in the past and even fired artillery into South Korea, why wouldn't they just admit they're behind this hack? Something doesn't add up here.

Coolness.

Xerxexx on Dec 23, 2014

24

When will there be another movie like Rocky IV to come along and help put aside our differences and prove that "everybody can change"? Of course this is a comedy, so I hardly expect anything inspiring, but I just hope that another film can come along that's based around North Korea to show a side of it that is unknown to most people. A lot of people know that it's a terrible place with a mad tyrant for a leader, but I challenge Hollywood filmmakers to make a film that reaches the heartbreaking and tragic levels of this speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufhKWfPSQOw

Sweet. Dude. Bit of silly story in the end.

DAVIDPD on Dec 23, 2014

26

Listen up you piece of garbage, rah rah USA is what's it's all about. If you don't like the US, than get the fuck out. And avoiding freedom because it's inconvenient for you makes you a god damned coward. Saying you're not a coward doesn't make you not a coward. Your behavior makes you a coward or not, and your behavior makes YOU a coward. I'm going to see this movie when it comes out not because it's high brow but because it's my right to view the content that I choose!

The irony of him having the freedom to say that along with all his anti-establishment schtick... priceless.

avconsumer2 on Dec 24, 2014

29

I'm not fighting against people who fight for our country. Heroes who fight for our country should be rewarded. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was belittling people who fight for the USA from quite frankly but you are very mistaken. Additionally I was directing that comment at people who say 'Don't see this movie, because you could get hurt or offend someone. I find it sad that you seem to think that freedom of speech especially in the face of threats is "a joke and a great pity". Freedom of speech is something that people like you fought hard for and it should be exercised especially in cases like this movie. Sorry for the late comment, jus saw this and am learning to use Disqus.

Bill on Jan 22, 2015

30

I was upset when the movie was pulled and wanted to go to the theaters just to say F-you to GOP, knowing that I had no interest in the movie when I first heard about it. Most will see it just for that fact alone and say it was a good movie, forcing themselves to like this film. I'm over my knee-jerk reaction. God forbid if anything did happen, but you can die just eating beef jerky, so to each their own.

mooreworthy on Dec 23, 2014

Well that's good for the future of risky subject matter in movies and for Seth Rogen fans. I truly despise Seth Rogen movies so I was gonna pass even before all this insanity.

NK is a tragedy of mass proportions. Maybe in some sick way, the silly movie will help shine more of a spotlight onto the NK crisis. This kind of oppression makes me sick and aside from all the BS thats going on here in the states, no one should live like this. Wish there would be an easy solution but looking at their Military im not sure if invading would be easy. maybe taken out the entire Regime is the only way....

Sascha Dikiciyan on Dec 24, 2014

Now Seth and Franco should make a comedy on how they pulled off this scam on the general public...an update on Wag The Dog of sorts.

What about Canada? Rogen is Canadian after all.

David Diaz on Dec 24, 2014

36

The movie was barely funny.. . And it ends with him being blown up while in his helicopter and Seth Rogen or Franco's character shoots them in a tank.. so anti-climatic , the movies only redeeming joke was "Where does he poo" "Our great leader does not poo, he has no butt hole" Pretty much sums up the movie..
