Sound Off: RDJ in David Dobkin's 'The Judge' - What Did You Think?

The Judge

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Defend your Honor. Now playing in theaters nationwide is David Dobkin's (Shanghai Knights, Wedding Crashers, The Change-Up, Fred Claus) dramatic turn The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. RDJ plays a city lawyer named Hank Palmer who returns to his small hometown where his father is suspected of murder. He then gets involved in the case and sets out to discover the truth. The ensemble cast includes Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Dax Shepard and Leighton Meester. So how is the film? Smart change of pace for Dobkin or not? If you've seen it, leave a comment with your own thoughts on The Judge.

Spoiler Warning: We strongly urge everyone to actually see the film before reading ahead, as there may be spoilers below. We also encourage all commenters to keep major spoilers from the film to a minimum, if possible. However, this is an open discussion from this point on! Beware of spoilers, don't ruin this movie!

Editor's note: I haven't seen it yet, but wanted to open a discussion about it anyway. Here's a brief excerpt from A.O. Scott's review in NY Times: "The patriarch of the Palmer brood is the title character and the only reason to take an interest in this movie, since he is played by Robert Duvall. Judge Palmer (even his sons call him that) does not represent anything new for Mr. Duvall. He’s crusty, but with an occasional twinkle in his eye and a well-hidden soft spot… Then The Judge turns into a crime story, and a supershouty, macho-weepy, buried-family-secrets melodrama. A fellow just out of the penitentiary has died in a hit and run, and his blood turns up on the fender of the old man’s Cadillac. Guess who represents him in the murder trial that unfolds in his very own courtroom?"

What did you think of David Dobkin's The Judge? Heartfelt, moving film or convoluted mess?
We will remove any comments that indicate you have not seen the movie, as this area is meant to discuss the film only once you have seen it and can talk about your thoughts. Please keep the comments civilized!

Sorry AB, haven't seen it, but it looks amazing. I am staying away from reviews in order to see it fresh when it hits here.

Whoa...DavidPD...almost didn't recognize you! Dont know if I've ever seen you without a fresh self-portrait (which are all great BTW). Did you get a new pup?

I have just been missing him. I am currently living away from my boy, Fergus. By the time you read this there will be a new picture.

Nice new portrait! Do you do your own work, or have a friend/relative into photography? Hopefully you'll be seeing Fergus again soon!

I have been living in South Korea for the last 14 months and plan on living here for another 24 so it will be a long time before my boy and I are reunited... T-T // I shoot my own stuff with a Nikon D7000 body, Nikkor 50mm 1.8G or Tokina 90mm Macro.
