'The Death of Superman Lives' Trailer Explores Tim Burton's Failure

The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?

Anyone who loves Superman knows that director Tim Burton almost followed up his successful adaptation of Batman by bringing The Big Blue Boy Scout to the big screen as well. Nicolas Cage was once meant to play the superhero with a script from fanboy favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith. It was a weird production with the likes of Chris Rock playing Jimmy Olsen and Kevin Spacey once on board as Lex Luthor, way before Superman Returns came knocking at his door for the same role. Now the documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? (which we featured as a Kickstarter film in the beginning of 2013) explores what went wrong with the film, and we have the first trailer. Watch it below!

Here's the first trailer for The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? from Jon Schnepp:

The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? is directed by Jon Schnepp and explores the failed production of a Superman film that was supposed to be directed by Tim Burton (Batman, Beetlejuice) and written by Kevin Smith (Clerks). The film documents the making of the film that was never to be, talking about the casting of Nicolas Cage as Superman, the story that included villains like Brainiac and even a cameo by Batman. With concept art, behind the scenes footage, interviews and more, this is the most in-depth chronicle of the Superman movie we'll never see. There's no release date just yet, because the film still needs to be completed. Donate here to help finish the documentary film for everyone to see! Cool?

This looks like it could've been awesome. However, i really really dislike anything Kevin Smith. That dude is so annoying.

I think we were spared one of the biggest peices of shit movies that would have ever been created. Thank you for not making this movie.

LOL. It really could have been a terrific failure.

Love the raw footage in there with Nick Cage. I'd watch this documentary by myself in the theater (sorry honey). Personally, I think the film should focus on what the story would have been. Maybe have 2 intersecting storylines: 1. The production ramp up and the story falling apart. 2. A cartoon in chronological order of what the film would have been in between the documentary scenes.

I think back then I would of rather of seen that, than all those shitty batman films that came after. It looks cheesy now, but back in the day everyone would of loved it. Batman and supes together! Deep down I have always wanted superman to die. It got boring knowing he would always win. Thats why superman allstar is on of my favorite animated supes movies.

Such a strange concept. Now that we have the modern Superman it is really hard to take this seriously. But yeah it looks like it could have been spectacular.
