Toby Kebbell

Briefly: Well it sounds like it's official. Variety is now reporting that 20th Century Fox and director Josh Trank have chosen Toby Kebbell to star as Dr. Doom, the arch-nemesis villain in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Kebbell, a well-known henchman/character actor from England, was already mentioned in the shortlist of names in the running for the role a few weeks ago. The other contenders included Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) and Sam Riley (On the Road), but Variety claims Fox has ended up picking Kebbell (who will also be seen in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) to star as Doom.

Josh Trank's new take on the Marvel superhero team Fantastic Four has been in development for years, even before Trank made his mark directing Chronicle. With a June 19, 2015 summer release already set, casting is finally underway so that shooting can start soon, and so far they've chosen Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell for the other main roles in the comic book movie. Kebbell made his first big appearance in Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla before going on to appear in Prince of Persia, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, War Horse, Wrath of the Titans, The East and The Counselor, in addition to Dawn of the Apes. He will bring quite a bit of energy to the role of Victor von Doom, nemesis of the Fantastic Four.

While hopeful this reboot will be successful, I really don't get a lot of their casting decisions.

Don't judge until you see it...why do people need to be reminded of this? Remember how people were so angry because of Heath Ledger taking on Joker???...time to chill, for now

"While hopeful this reboot will be successful..." I want it to be good. I didn't say anything pejorative.

You said you don't get a lot of their casting decisions...do we ever though??? We always seem mad when something goes a little bit differently...let's hope for the best

Sure, we can't judge the final product until we see it, but we SHOULD judge what we know and see. If some of the casting choices seem odd, as observing fans we should say so. Maybe they'll hit it out of the park...but just because they COULD hit it out of the park doesn't mean we should just assume that they will with zero apprehension. When you have a lot of good signs, and then one 'red flag' then maybe it's good to give them the benefit of the doubt. Nolan had already made the great Batman Begins heading into The Dark Knight. In general, it was probably best to trust his judgement. Likewise, Snyder did a very good job with Man of Steel, so him having faith in Affleck probably isn't a terrible sign. But while Trank made a good movie with Chronicle...a lot of things heard about this Fantastic Four movie just seem a bit dubious. Such as changing Johnny and Sue Storm into step-siblings JUST so an actor he likes can play the Human Torch. That's not necessarily going to damn the film, but it certainly is worth noting.

Either this guy is totally Mexican or some kind of Italian. Along with the fact we now have a black Human Torch, I think Mr. Fantastic should be a homosexual. We need to get on board with today's culture!!

The guy is British. If you're going to condescend, at least know wtf you're talking about.

Absolutely brilliant. Perfect. Too bad the rest of the cast seems equally and oppositely terrible. Kebble is one of the actors I've really wanted to see in a Marvel/DC movie. I was thinking Ghost Rider or Green Lantern but if they're not going to give Mark Strong his rightful place as Dr. Doom then Kebbel is an amazing choice.

Damn. Mark Strong would have been an excellent Dr. Doom.

Good f**king call. Mark Strong would have been perfect.

This Fantastic Flop will not do well even with one good cast member. The Torch casting and changing the origin makes this a phony knock-off of the real Stan Lee story.
