With a role in Lawless, actor Tom Hardy has already dabbled in the wrong side of the law during America's history, but now he's heading into gangster territory in his homeland of the United Kingdom. ScreenDaily reports Hardy will actually play two gangsters, the infamous identical twin brothers Ronald and Reginald Kray known for their criminal activities in the 50s and 60s. Payback and 42 director Brian Helgeland, who previously wrote the film noir L.A. Confidential, will write and direct the film currently going by the title Legend. However, Hardy is only in talks right now, and hasn't closed a deal to star yet.
The brothers ran a gang called The Firm, who was involved in armed robberies, arson, protection rackets and murders .The story will follow the relationship the two brothers had with each other (including Reggie trying to control the psychotic tendencies of Ronnie), not to mention their encounters with notorious gangsters like Jack “the Hat” McVitie, who was murdered by Reginald in 1967, and the brothers’ nemesis in the police force, Leonard “Nipper” Read, who was dedicated to getting the brothers in prison. The brothers had their story told in a 1990 film called The Krays, but this sounds much more promising with Hardy.
