Since directing the satisfying fighting drama Warrior, filmmaker Gavin O'Connor stepped behind the camera for the once-struggling western Jane Got a Gun. Now he's lining up another feature film gig as Variety reports O'Connor will be at the helm of Massacre in the Himalayas, a film in development at Hollywood Gang Productions based on an August 2013 article from Men's Journal. The true story from Freddie Wilkinson follows an international team of world-class mountain climbers intent on conquering the K2 summit in Pakistan, but are plunged into a grueling journey when attacked by a group of extremists.
The attack resulted in the death of 10 climbers and their Pakistani cook as well. Perhaps what's most interesting about this tale, besides the fact that it's true, is that it takes place on one of the highest points on the planet. A screenwriter will be found to script a fictionalized version of the story, but O'Connor is already excited about the film saying, "I love the idea of using the colossal backdrop of K2, the second highest peak on earth, to explore a man’s battle for survival against the Taliban, nature, and himself. Our hero becomes a one-man army on a quest to avenge the deaths of his mountaineering team. His experience becomes a living nightmare, a lifetime journey, and a redefinition of the man.” Sound good?
