Following the announcement of the nominations for the Directors Guild Awards, now we're looking at the directors behind this year's biggest animated films. We've previously featured The Hollywood Reporter's awards roundtable chat with some of the prime live-action directors from 2013, and now the trade has sat down with a handful of animation filmmakers including Chris Buck, Dan Scanlon, Chris Wedge, Kristine Belson and Chris Meledandri. Buck, Scanlon and Wedge directed Frozen, Monsters University and Epic respectively while Belson produced The Croods and Meledandri produced Despicable Me 2. It's a fascinating discussion about animation and what goes into these films. Watch it!
Here's The Hollywood Reporter's animation filmmaker's roundtable:
In the above discussion, they discuss how animation isn't just about making movies for kids (a common misconception among some clueless adults). In addition, they talk about the challenge of casting known celebrity voices, but wanting audiences to eventually get so involved with the character, that they forget a certain actor is doing the voice. Other topics include getting input from their kids about the film's they're working on, but the most interesting topic comes when they begin to discuss Gravity, which is kind of like a big animated movie with all the visual effects that are used to tell the story. Make sure you watch this one.

That was pretty interesting, still think there is room for so much more in the field of animation though.
