"You don't even know what it's capable of! Or what it's doing." Wow - this is one of the best shorts I've seen in a while - David Weinstein's Envoy, uploaded to his Vimeo recently. Stellar VFX combined with an emotional, compelling story - a kid and his robot, think Transformers with a little The Iron Giant. And I love that it goes all out, never shying away from showing the robot and some awesome action scenes, and it follows through until the very end. Envoy is under 10 minutes and is worth a quick watch, it's refreshing to see something so good for a short film like this. Someone let this guy make a movie, I don't want this to end.
"Details" on the short from Vimeo: "Science fiction, action adventure, short film to be used as a proof of concept for a larger full-length feature film story. A young boy discovers a deadly alien creature and winds up entangled in a top secret government operation." Envoy is written & directed by VFX artist/filmmaker David Weinstein (his official site), produced by David Weinstein, Mariam Price & Adam Coggin, featuring music composed by Edwin Wendler. The cast includes Will Spencer, Jayson Ziegenhagen and Elijah Allan-Blitz. For more details, head to the short's Vimeo page or official site located at: envoyfilm.com. Thoughts?

Shame about the Predator vibe and I thought it was going to have a còughing fit, otherwise pretty cool.

Hmm, a very well executed combination of pre-existing elements. Zero new ideas here. All he needed to do was introduce one little piece of originality to set this apart.

visually very cool but felt like a rip off more than a homage

Very well made, but nothing groundbraking. Every scene was predictable from a mile away. The overall style reminds me a bit of JJ Abrams tho.

This is just a concept. For a concept, it's amazing. I wonder what he could do with a full-length feature.

to me just sort of felt derivative? the concept and design were kind of underwhelming, but the production values were very tight. the style was nothing distinct, just had a very 80s feel with kinda antiquated creative ideas

Very impressive. I appreciate some are saying that it's the same as others directors/films etc but I liked the FX, the design of the suit etc and what film nowadays doesn't have elements of other films within it? If this was a trailer, I'd definitely see the film.

Might aswell be E.T. with weapons of mass destruction, but disney will grab it and it will end up like every other film it gets, yeuk!
