Watch: Disney Uses Classic 'Sleeping Beauty' in New 'Maleficent' Trailer
by Ethan Anderton
January 20, 2014
Last year brought a brief teaser for Disney's upcoming live-action tale focusing on their trademark villainess Maleficent, from the animated classic Sleeping Beauty. The teaser serves mostly to introduce Angelina Jolie as the sorceress in full make-up and wardrobe. This new trailer shows much more of Jolie, and much more of the film. However, it's an odd trailer, because it uses quick clips from Sleeping Beauty to compare and contrast with this new live-action version. Things like the computer animated fairies don't look very impressive, and the tone feels very odd for a film about a rather evil Disney villain. Will this work? Watch!
Here's the new trailer for Robert Stromberg's Maleficent (now pulled by Disney, watch via ComingSoon):
Robert Stromberg (a production designer on Alice in Wonderland and Avatar) is making his directorial debut with Maleficent from a script written by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast). Angelina Jolie plays the title villain from the classic Disney film Sleeping Beauty in this live-action spin that also stars Sharlto Copley (District 9), Elle Fanning (Super 8), Sam Riley (On the Road), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Juno Temple (Atonement) and more. Disney sends Maleficent to theaters everywhere in 3D on May 30th, 2014 this summer. Visit the film's official website. Excited?

Surely that's Mickey Mouse?!

Disney's greatest villains are called "greed" and "money"

i can't believe how bad this looks

@linkfx:disqus It looks awesome!

That was a pretty bad trailer, and the movie looks like another VFX showcase to me. A good dragon battle could get them a ticket from me. Why do I have a suspicion she won't end up being evil, just sad and misunderstood, and then change afterwards? If not then that would be commendable.

So that's how you pronounce it.

Honestly that 1st teaser was brilliant. It set a wonderful tone for the film and made me excited. This trailer was just so BLEGH that idk if I'll be watching this at all

Yeah, they seem to heading in the direction that she doesn't start out as evil but then moves in that direction. Very Elphaba-esque. It even might be that some of her actions we thought were evil were meant to protect Aurora. We shall see. Disney has been throwing out some VFX garbage simply because they can. This might be one of those judging from the trailer. Hope not. I would love to like Jolie again.

Say what you want, but I can't wait to see Elle Fanning on the big screen again!

What's with the cheek bones?
TheOct8pus on Jan 21, 2014
T@TheOct8pus:disqus They are specially made prosthetic cheek bones for the character 'Maleficent' that she's playing in the movie.
Sean on Jan 21, 2014
Well...obviously. But why? Why does she need perfectly triangular cheekbones??
TheOct8pus on Jan 22, 2014
@TheOct8pus:disqus Maleficent had them in the 1959 Animated Sleeping Beauty movie.
Sean on Jan 22, 2014
And Sleeping Beauty had a 6 inch waist. Maybe they should have put a tighter belt around Elle Fanning
TheOct8pus on Jan 23, 2014
@TheOct8pus:disqus That wouldn't have happened in this new live action Maleficent movie.
Sean on Jan 23, 2014
Exactly. It would have looked stupid and unnatural....like Angelina's cheekbones!!
TheOct8pus on Jan 24, 2014
@TheOct8pus:disqus No, Her cheekbones are accurate for the character Maleficent, because Maleficent had them in the original 1959 animated movie, where as Elle Fanning's Sleeping Beauty character is going to not have looked stupid and unnatural. Angelina Jolie's cheeks for the character Maleficent the movie look the way they do, because they are specially made prosthetic cheeks for the character 'Maleficent' that she plays in the movie.

What the hell is she saying at 1:18? It sounds something like "how once".
97point6 on Jan 21, 2014
@97point6:disqus She says 'How wonderful' .
