The Giver

"There's something missing from our lives, something that has been stolen." With Divergent poised to hit theaters this weekend, a more iconic young adult sci-fi book is coming to theaters later this year with The Giver. Based on Lois Lowry's Newbury Medal winning book of the same name, the film follows Jonas (Brandon Thwaites), who lives in a content, future dystopian society that feels a little too familiar to the rest of the young adult adaptations we've been seeing. But after being given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory, he begins to unravel the secrets behind his community, and they might be rather disturbing. Maybe Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep will give this iconic tale the weight it needs. Watch!

Here's the first trailer for Phillip Noyce's adaptation of The Giver from The Weinstein Company:

The Giver is directed by Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Saint, Catch a Fire, Salt) and adapted by newcomer Michael Mitnick. The haunting story, adapted from Lois Lowry's young adult book of the same name, centers on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep also star in the film which The Weinstein Company sends to theaters on August 15th.

Not quite how I pictured the story in my head, but it's still only the first trailer.

Kinda bummed that it isn't in black and white for the future scenes and in color when he is looking at the past.

Looks good to me. Nicely paced

Carpola on Mar 19, 2014

Maybe I need to read the book, but GAWWDD I'm kinda over these sci fi, dysotopian, worlds where beautiful young people have no choices.

Why? on Mar 19, 2014

Elysium was kind of a good take on that...

Gowd, that movie still makes me angry. So much potential.

Buzzfunk on Mar 22, 2014

You do. It's a great book and it came decades before all this YA nonsense that's flooding the market nowadays.

davidshaw on Mar 19, 2014

decades? try 1993. barely two.

Brian James Parker on Mar 20, 2014

So, yeah, I'm right. Good try, though.

davidshaw on Mar 21, 2014

"YA Sci-Fi" Wow! Who knew there was even an acronym for this genre?! I'm getting old....

Ron on Mar 19, 2014

SPOILER: They completely ruined it by not filming in black and white. That was the whole point. The world had no color until he meets the giver.

ion677 on Mar 19, 2014

Yea I imagined it in black and white. Hopefully it works out.

Franklin Carpio on Mar 19, 2014

You ruined the movie by telling this. Had no idea your spoiler was going to give away everything.

Nash on Mar 20, 2014

Well done. Lets hope the movie lives up to that trailer.

Zak Coleman on Mar 19, 2014

Looks good. THE GIVER is a classic for a reason.

DAVIDPD on Mar 19, 2014

Interesting to see the overall positive responses to the trailer. Anybody else think this looks like crap? Loved the book.

DavidSpriggs on Mar 19, 2014

Yep. Total shit, imo.

Buzzfunk on Mar 22, 2014

It looks interesting, however it reminds me of a similar storyline that was in Equilibrium.

ray on Mar 20, 2014

What Ray said below...Equilibrium but with an A list cast.
