This year, the brilliant minds over at Laika have The Boxtrolls coming to theaters this fall. But the stop-motion animation studio has delivered two previous stunning pieces of animated cinema in the form of Coraline and ParaNorman. Since these films are meticulously crafted by hundreds of talented hands (you can see a behind the scenes trailer for The Boxtrolls right here), it takes years to bring them to the big screen. In order to showcase their hard work, Laika put together a cool little featurette that shows just how they're able to make their gorgeous animation films look so flawless and incredible. Watch the featurette!
Here's the fantastic featurette We Are Laika, from the stop-motion animation studio's YouTube:
While many people vaguely know how stop-motion animated films are made by moving various figurines and set pieces one frame at a time to make-up the 24 frames it takes to fill a single second of screentime, there's even more elements that go into these feature length projects. As the featurette shows, while nearly all of the characters, set pieces and more are crafted like sculptures and moved by hand, there are certain tricks that make it a little easier. Plus, some scenes are so intricate and detailed that certain elements must be shot separately and then combined into a single shot with special effects. It's truly remarkable. Cool?

Amazing studio, kind of sad that there is only one other comment. Really looking forward to Boxtrolls.
