By now, mostly everyone is familiar with the pop culture convention known as Comic-Con. But that's wasn't always the case. In fact, the convention has a long history well before the dawn of the internet, when everything from the convention was disseminated for all eyes around the world to see. While we're preparing our coverage for the rest of the week straight from the San Diego Convention Center, you can take the time to quickly learn the history of the nerd mecca that started off in hotel basements, and has turned into one of the biggest events of the year, taking over the bay city known as a whale's vagina. Watch below!

Here's The History of Comic-Con in 4 Minutes, brought to our attention by SlashFilm:

It's cool to see that a film like Star Wars made a debut at Comic-Con before anyone was even wowed by the film that would become a sci-fi staple and one of the most influential films of all-time. But that also bums us out since Disney isn't bringing J.J. Abrams and Star Wars: Episode VII to the convention early on to get the hype rolling (mostly because they know they don't need to at this point). Anyway, we're settled in San Diego, so stay tuned to all our coverage of big movie panels right here, and we'll be posting tons of trailers, images, video blogs and more for you to enjoy. What are you excited about at Comic-Con?

Ethan and Alex, please enjoy your participation in Comic Con 2014. I'm looking forward to some interesting articles from both of you in the next four days.

I recall reading about 1976 Comic Con from either an ad in a comic book or a science fiction magazine about the small event. Not really sure. I remember reading a vignette about a new move called 'The Star Wars' that was being made in the US. I got excited about that this strange movie. I was a Trekkie then and I kicked myself because I lived in Australia and couldn't afford to attend any event. There wasn't much of anything down under for comic book. scifi and Star Trek fans alike.

Is there going to be a meet up again this year? I hope so!
