Ben Mendelsohn Maybe Circling Lead Role in 'Star Wars: Rogue One'
Now that the first standalone spin-off to follow Star Wars: The Force Awakens has the official title of Star Wars: Rogue One and a confirmed leading lady in Oscar nominee Felicity Jones, it's time for the rest of the film's cast to get rounded up before production begins later this year. Deadline has word that Ben Mendelsohn, a spectacular Aussie character actor you should recognize from The Dark Knight Rises and Killing Them Softly, is circling another lead role alongside Jones. Of course, as has become customary with all Star Wars casting news, there's absolutely no hint of what kind of character he will be playing at all.
Though there hasn't been any confirmation, it sounds like the spin-off is most likely about the heist to get the plans to the first Death Star, meaning the film takes place sometime between Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars (likely closer in the timeline to the latter). It's certainly one of the cooler ideas that could have happened, and it's infinitely better than any origin story. Though I'm sure they'll shoehorn in some familiar characters somehow just for the hell of it. Anyway, Mendelsohn would make a fine addition to the Star Wars universe, and we'll be on the lookout for any more additions to the Rogue One coming up.

Still can't believe he's gone. Can't wait to see the film.

This is the mission where they almost all died, right? I hope this is the project we are looking for.

Horrible casting decision. Was Adam Sandler not available?

I really liked him in A Place Beyond the Pines, as well as Killing Them Softly. It's gonna be cool to see him in the Star Wars Universe. I can totally see him being either a great antihero or a cool villain. Or actually a Han Solo type reluctant hero. Whatever it may be I'm excited with this news.

Absolutely, He's great at playing "Damaged". He was also really good in a british prison film last year called Starred Up. If you like his films check that one out if you haven't already.

Same here, he was the best part of Killing Them Softly and really shined in Animal Kingdom as well. Good to see him getting higher profile work...
