Blomkamp's 'Alien 5' Movie is On Hold While 'Prometheus 2' Fires Up

This is why Guillermo del Toro always says you must be working on multiple projects at once. So if (or inevitably when) one falls apart, you already have another in the works that you can pick up and continue. Vancouver-based filmmaker Neill Blomkamp took to Twitter last night to announce his Alien 5 project is officially "holding/ pending prometheus 2". Blomkamp has been sending out photos of concept art and weapons designs, and it looks like he was making major progress developing his version of Alien. However, word going ’round was that Ridley Scott is so excited to be working on Prometheus 2 again, he wants that to be the only sci-fi from this universe. So until they've figured that out and finished it, this movie is on hold.
Here's the tweet from Neill Blomkamp where he explains the current situation in less than 140 characters:
alien is kinda holding/ pending prometheus 2. So I shall be working on other things… as much as I love the xeno- and Lt ripley

As of February of this year, Neill Blomkamp was saying that it's official he is working on an Alien movie. He posted an Instagram shot of some xenomorph concept art and stated "So I think it's officially my next film." Ever since then, things have been quiet as he has been working very intensely behind-the-scenes to develop the script and all the material for it. Blomkamp has been posting shots of concept art and weapons to his Instagram over the last few months, indicating that works is being done and they are (or were) progressing towards making this movie. His hint in this most recent tweet is that it is going to be about Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver who was rumored to be back, and would definitely have real Alien xenomorphs in it unlike Prometheus. Only time will tell if it comes back together and we one day see Blomkamp's Alien.

This will be received negatively I'm sure. But I loved Prometheus and the Martian was a step back in the right direction so, as much as I want alien 5, I will eagerly await Prometheus 2.

Not surprising....Alien 5 (with an older Sigourney and Hicks) was a gamble to begin with....Prometheus - despite the naysayers - was a hit movie, so it makes sense for the studio to release Prometheus 2 first....if anything, it'll create buzz for Alien 5 (if that ever gets made. Ripley ain't getting any younger)

it doesnt and Prometheus was a major letdown for the Alien fans but after Martian and a new scripter I'm hoping for the best with Prometheus 2

IF you're willing to drop $20 for the BluRay version , and its deleted scenes , you would Not think it was a letdown . more to the point , BR version is more like Alien than the Theatrical version gets any credit for .. also :?)) u should be comparing it to the BluRay version of Alien ..As that has more character development of the Nostromo's crew . Prometheus would have almost 50 mins of scenes before the planet was explored , with its deleted scenes

Good idea! Ridley is back on track and Prometheus was a nice science fiction movie, especially in 3D. Chappie was fun, not great but love to see his version of alien, but i doubt we will ever see it! But two different timelines of the same franchise is a horrible idea of course. Wise decision....

I am torn on this one, on one hand I would love to see the next Alien movie.. but not crazy at all about the director. On the other hand, although Prometheus was a let down ( albeit well shot and looked great ), I am still curious to see where it goes.

Will he finally make another great film? Maybe. I will wait with calmed expectations.

This Alien movie could have been great since Blomkamp was a great fan of the property. Hopefully he can later revisit this concept, but I wouldn't mind seeing another masterful, original film from him, hopefully something on par with District 9.

Maybe the director of District 9 should remember David's Fincher journey/struggle with Alien 3.

Kind of sounds to me like Ridley Scott is afraid to be upstaged by Blomkamp. Almost as if he doesn't want Blomkamp making the film everyone expects him to make. Be nice and let everyone play Ridley.
