"In your face, Neil Armstrong." 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first full trailer for Ridley Scott's The Martian, adapted from Andy Weir's novel. Matt Damon stars as astronaut Mark Watney, the leader of one of the first manned missions to Mars, however he ends up stranded there. You'll see the rest of the story in the trailer, as it sets up a fascinating and exciting story of survival against all odds. This kind of fits in nicely as a prequel to Interstellar, but it also seems to stand alone as an invigorating new space exploration entry. The movie seems to have an expanded focus on a number of characters, including the rest of the crew but also many back on Earth. It gets really good when Damon begins to figure out how to survive by himself.
Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ridley Scott's The Martian, direct from 20th Century Fox:
You can see the video introduction to the Hermes and the rest of the Ares 3 crew in this teaser video here.
The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator, Prometheus) and written by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods). Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) became one of the first people to walk on Mars. But after a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Sebastian Stan and more star in the film 20th Century Fox will release in time for Thanksgiving on November 25th.

Looks too cheesy and as usual they showed too much on the trailer, they could have easily stopped once it was shown that he was stranded, but they had to go full cheese

It's disappointing they have to reveal so much in trailers these days. A bit of mystery goes a long way imo.
RAW_D on Jun 8, 2015

They didn't 'have' to, they just do. Cause they are so scare movie goers are smart and need to know everything before hand. So they condition them to be dumb by making everything over-explained and shown before hand. On the other hand, I have friends and family will literally not watch a movie unless they know "if he dies in the end" or not beforehand.

The application of science to the situation is what has me hooked, and those solutions weren't really revealed in the trailer.

Murph! MURPH!!! Just kidding. This movie is a wish made true, since I read the book my thought trough the whole reading was: "A movie about this would be so freaking awesome"

Again they are showing to much... After a minute I thought :omg I've seen the movie! So this is the way to destroy popcorn time! Now I get it! 🙂
ari smulders on Jun 8, 2015

I usually just make some popcorn before I watch trailers nowadays. That way at least it feels like I'm at the movies.

Popcorn time is a free illegal streaming service. It's huge overhere in the Netherlands. 1,3 million fellow dutchies are streaming illegal overhere in the Netherlands...
ari smulders on Jun 8, 2015
25
Well, why is that illegal if it's free? Is that some new Dutch sense of freedom, calling free people illegal ...
shiboleth on Jun 8, 2015
26
Haha noop! You are ofcourse free to download popcorn time, but using it is illegal... But 1,3 miljon people use it (we are with 17 miljon) so we aren't exactly law abiding citizens. Its also free overhere to smoke pot, and that's not illegal...
ari smulders on Jun 8, 2015
27
I like Netherlands, don't get me wrong. I also have been in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and some other places in country (spend almost ten very nice days there),.. My problem is: why popcorn should be interpreted as illegal? If people share what they like, it sounds like sharing is illegal ...
shiboleth on Jun 8, 2015
28
Because it like the pirate bay, only this is streaming...
ari smulders on Jun 8, 2015
29
I totally understand you (and I guess this is not the place) but I hoped for better answer. Let's put it another way: are you against the Popcorn time and Pirate Bay? Or is this way too straight question?
shiboleth on Jun 9, 2015
30
I am not against it, that would be hypocritical because I download everything in a semi illegal way. I know productioncompany's lose allot of money, but they are also making big bucks as so the Hollywood a list! So if I can't download anything anymore because they found away to make it impossible I feel not sad. It's there money... But popcorn time is very user-friendly, so I accepted that they won't accept that. Everybody can used it, and with downloading you must spent some time and work to see a movie on your flat-screen .. And there will be always ways to see something illegal, but not for big crowds...

Honest answers. I agree with a lot that you say. Best regards to you and to Netherlands. Hope to visit it someday again. I'm from Croatia, in many ways maybe not so happy country as yours, but also not so bad either. We may not have the opportunity to smoke free pot, but we like movies a lot, we also do enjoy very fine weather throughout the year and with different seasons; there's beautiful and mostly sunny Adriatic coast to enjoy, and very fine and diverse food. If you come someday, you just might like it ... Nice talking to you Ari ...
shiboleth on Jun 9, 2015
32
I heard along time from other people that Croatia is a beautiful country, so need to convince me 🙂 We dutch are indeed very liberal but we have also our downsides. The last 10 years we had political assasinations, and Geert Wilders is a very dangerous guy with his standpoints on the Islam... So not everything is happy in the Netherlands!
ari smulders on Jun 10, 2015
33
Unfortunately, I believe all this regarding politicians is some kind of European disease, blaming Others for everything. In that respect, Croatia can be very unfair country also. But, on the bright side, there's more and more foreigners here and we start looking better in that respect. But, downside comparing to Netherland is; we are (well, I want to believe I am more liberal and open-minded) still very conservative in many respects. So, everything isn't shinny in Croatia, either. Cheers Ari ...

There are everywhere rotten eggs, but the migrant problem is indeed a magnet for everything what's bad in humans. If the european military doesn't put boots on the ground in Isis country and wipe the fuckers out, the problem stays...
ari smulders on Jun 11, 2015
35
It's a huge topic, indeed. And profoundly ugly. I am always a bit unwilling to start it since I come from the area where hatred to Others is way too usual practice and shameful reminder. As for the Isis, they're disgusting in every respect and deserve worse ... I don't know what to think of European military, though. We had enough problem with colonialism already ...
shiboleth on Jun 12, 2015
36
Oké,you corrected me in a right way. But it is neccesary that there are going to be boots on the ground in Isis country... The sadistic zealots from Isis must be wiped out. Throwing bombs has no effect, at least small ones.
ari smulders on Jun 12, 2015
37
Don't worry, I don't defend those 'zealots' and have no wish for it. They are disgrace for humanity and should be removed from the Earth. As for the military boots I just hope that afterwards they don't become an excuse to force some other military coup ... But Ari, I think I mostly and totally agree with you...

If you read the book, it basically follows the plot of Val Kilmer's "Red Planet".. Trekking across Mars, reusing old Martian lander pars to communicate, rigging and ridding a ship to get back up, and a "I felt guilty" female commander....Same shit, different day. 😀

My brother-in-law read the book and said it was hilarious. Very cynical in tone but intense. Looks like they may have kept that the same for the movie. I may try and give it a read prior to seeing this...cause....you know...

Well damn! I been waiting a few years now for Matt Damon to make a comeback after the Bourne Ultimatum and it looks like he's finally done just that. Also that "I'm gonna have to science the shit outta this" line was freakin genius!

Very good. I just want this to be a good film from Scott. // I am not sure, but it seems they may have made a few of the Control Center characters a different race than they were in the books.

Watney isn't the leader of the mission, as the article states. He's a mission specialist (botanist if I recall from the book). Jessica Chastain plays the mission commander.

Listen I FUCKING loved this trailer. I can`t wait to see the film. It looks fantastic. Goosebumps inducing even. However, WHY THE FUCK do so many trailers have to give soooooooo much of the plot away in the trailers? Like Wtf, I feel like I just saw 75% of the films main beats lmfao.
Jorrell Mcdaniel on Jun 8, 2015

It's about a guy left on Mars and trying to save him. It's not like its a super complex plot. It's pretty straightforward and they showed you that. Nothing is really "ruined". Remember it's about the journey not the destination.

Apart from we know that he gets left behind , the world thinks he's dead, there'll be no tension in 'will he won't he get a message through' and no relief when it I'd received.

WOWWW. There is a lot in this trailer but really it's not that big of a deal because it's a pretty straightforward film. I must say it looks spectacular and I'll forgive Ridley for the enjoyable but still underwhelming Prometheus lol.
