Black Adam / Dwayne Johnson

Last fall, Dwayne Johnson officially made his choice to play Black Adam in the DC Comics adaptation of Shazam. We've got plenty of time before that film gets off the ground since it doesn't arrive until April 5th, 2019, but that doesn't mean Johnson isn't getting questions about the project at every turn. Well, Johnson spoke to Games Radar (via SlashFilm) about his forthcoming role in the the DC Comics universe, and despite earlier indications that Shazam might not tie into the world of Justice League, Johnson says their film will indeed be part of that universe. But he also teases something else pretty big.

Here's what Johnson thinks about his future as Black Adam:

"I think Black Adam is going to grow into becoming an anti-hero. It’s all written within the spirit of respecting and paying homage to the comics. As we know, Black Adam started out as a slave. When he’s given the powers, he utilised them. Then in the wake of his powers, tragedy strikes, which turns his sentiment and tone in terms of psychology."

And he also gets a little head of the curve by teasing some big things for the character:

"It was all agreed that the worlds are all interconnected… One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman or any of the DC characters. But that said, there’s a great independence to Black Adam from the DC world, allowing us to inject, not only viciousness, but also winking humor."

That seems like more of just Johnson being hopeful that he'll end up on-screen with Superman and Batman at some point. But the takeaway is that Johnson is secure in confirming that he will be part of the DC Comics universe, and that's good to hear. As for whether or not we'll actually see Black Adam fighting Superman or Batman, we've got years before we can even start legitimately thinking about that. Again, Shazam doesn't even arrive until 2019, barring and changes in scheduling that consistently arise with comic book movies, so let's focus on the arrival of that hero on the big screen first. Thoughts?

Meh, I am not sure what DC can do to get me excited at this point, Maybe hire real acting talent. I love the Rock, but he is a bad actor, so Is Cavil, Moamo, Gadot, Oddly with all the moaning about Ben Affleck, he is probably the most talented actor in the movie....wait is Essenberg still in this? SO 2 real actors.

I hate to admit that Ben is actually better then the rest, but you're right, Him and Essenberg.

All a matter of taste. If you prefer your comic book movies geared towards teens and kids, then Marvel is your field. DC has a more rich and serious tone to their movies, injecting a sense of realm and realism to their supernatural abilities. Sure, not all DC movies have come out great, but hey, lets be fair, in my opinion Marvel has only truly done justice to one character, and thats what The Russo brothers did to Captain America. Everything else Marvel has put out is nothing but cheesey lines and cgi action.

lol. DC has only made good to great Batman movies. everything else has been terrible and very underwhelming compared to Marvel's track record. I'll admit: IM3 wasn't "Green Lantern bad" but it was still very bad. If sacrificing quality for "realism" (which again only applies to Nolan's Batman) means the movies end up being trash, I'll just stick to the "kid" Marvel movies.

ColtNoir on Feb 12, 2015

HA! If you think IM3 wasnt worse than GL than you're right, stick to "kid" movies.

I can argue which piece of shit tastes worse all day. I'd rather not, but don't act like one was far superior to the other. and yes, thanks for repeating my comment.

What?? You think Affleck and Eisenberg are "real" actors?? Wow man, that is crazy to me. I think Henry Cavil is the only genuine one they got. But it is your opinion and I respect it.

How about Ezra Miller?

I dont know anything about the man, so I cannot comment.

More horrible casting.

I'm more interested in seeing Shazam going up against Superman. Their fight in the Justice League Unlimited episode "Clash" was fantastic. One of the best episodes of that series. The good news is, I can still hope to see that 'clash' without Dwayne Johnson being involved!

DC is going to have to all in, and time is not on there side right now.

Oh The Rock. At least he us a great hype-man. Will we ever get a Shazam vs. Superman movie??? Probably not.

DAVIDPD on Feb 13, 2015

What a waste. Johnson should have gone to Marvel. At least they could have done something with him. With the Fast and Furious franchise taking on a new chapter, where will Johnson go that we equal box office gold? Back to G.I. Joe? Not!!
