Ennio Morricone

The more Morricone, the better. Our friends at The Film Stage picked up on a mention on the website for film distributor Wild Bunch that indicates Terrence Malick's long-awaited other film Voyage of Time will feature a score by legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone. It mentions in the cast & crew listings there will be Original Music by Ennio Morricone. Many may remember the news we breathlessly reported earlier this year about Morricone returning to score his first original western in over 40 years - which would be Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, arriving in theaters later this December. It looks like Morricone will follow that up with Malick's Voyage of Time, his non-fiction film due sometime in late 2016, hopefully.

Here's a description for Malick's Voyage of Time via Wild Bunch, which it seems is the most recent version:

Written and directed by Academy Award-nominated director Terrence Malick (Badlands, The Thin Red Line). Voyage of Time is a celebration of the earth, displaying the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse.

This film examines all that went to prepare the miracle that stands before us now. In words and with music, we are encouraged to view it with gratitude and awe. Science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet—all come together in Malick’s most original film to date.

Terrence Malick last worked with Ennio Morricone back in the 1970s, when he composed for Malick's film Days of Heaven and the result was another iconic Morricone score. Malick recently finished and premiered Knight of Cups at the Berlin Film Festival, with original music by Hanan Townshend, and that opens in US release next March 2016. He has another film being edited, but Voyage of Time has been on the docket ever since the early days of The Tree of Life. For a long time it was scheduled as an IMAX documentary release, focusing more on the "history of the universe" sequence that was seen in Tree of Life. This new description seems to hint that it will still be about the origin of man, and how did we get to now. Back in February, we reported that two versions, one narrated by Brad Pitt, the other by Cate Blanchett, would likely by released.

It's great to see Ennio Morricone doing more work, though who knows if he already recorded this score and it's just awaiting a release. The Film Stage reminds us that the latest tips indicate Terrence Malick may (could!) end up releasing both Voyage of Time and his other drama sometime in 2016. But Voyage of Time might not open until fall, so keep an eye out for updates. Until then, might as well listen to Days of Heaven.
