Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones & Kate McKinnon Are 'Ghostbusters' Too
by Ethan Anderton
January 27, 2015
After we heard that Melissa McCarthy was in talks for a role in Ghostbusters, it looks like director Paul Feig has found the rest of the paranormal investigators. Feig just took to Twitter with a picture of four actresses for the lead roles and not only is McCarthy confirmed to be in the film, but the rest of the crew is all "Saturday Night Live" cast members, though not all of them are the ones many were hoping for. Instead, Kristen Wiig Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are the other three Ghostbusters. Deadline says the studio is still in talks with all the stars, but Feig seems to be sure that everything is going to work. Read on!
Here's the tweet from Paul Feig announcing the cast, just with an image:

Many wanted Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as part of this cast, but Kristen Wiig is a solid choice. Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are the huge surprises though. McKinnon has only been on "Saturday Night Live" for a couple seasons, but her presence has been great, proving to be one of the best current cast members right now. Meanwhile, Jones just joined the cast this season, and she's been making some decent waves on the show, though I only really find her enjoyable in small doses. Now that the main cast is assembled, we just hope the script from Katie Dippold is good. Thoughts?
UPDATES: First of all, Paul Feig just announced the release date for the Ghostbusters reboot:
In other news, #Ghostbusters will be hitting theaters July 22, 2016. Save the date!

In addition, HitFix has some details on the characters we'll see in this reboot, which won't shoehorn the ladies into the same personalities or characters we saw from the original Ghostbusters franchise. The film is still in the early stages, but the ladies are as follows:
Erin Gabler is an academic on the tenure track at Columbia. Her former colleague and co-author is…
Abby Bergman, who’s more on the pop parapsychology side of things, and pursues ghosts for a living.
Jillian is Abby’s ghost hunting partner.
Patty is an MTA employee who comes across the main ghost.
Now we don't know for sure which actress is playing what character, but HitFix guesses that Wiig is Erin, Jones is Abby, McKinnon is Jillian, and McCarthy is Patty. However, my train of thought, just from these descriptions, imagines Wiig as Erin, McKinnon as Abby, McCarthy as Jillian and Jones as Patty. But HitFix may know more about their personalities beyond these small descriptions, so I could be completely off. But that's not all the details that have been unveiled about the Ghostbusters reboot.
Reportedly, the villain will be a "creepy mechanical genius" and they're hoping Peter Dinklage will take the role. In addition, there's the role of Martin Heiss, a professional debunker of the supernatural who tries to disprove the antics of the Ghostbusters after some videos of theirs go viral. He's described as being akin to William Atherton's character Walter Peck from the EPA in the original Ghostbusters. And who do they want for that role? They actually want that to be the cameo that brings Bill Murray into the movie, which would be brilliant. Again, it's still in the early stages of coming together, so things can change, but this doesn't sound half bad. Stay tuned for more

I think this will be like a bad SNL skit, but it will go on for 90 long minutes.

Remind me again why this is even being made?

Jones hasn't been funny on SNL yet. Playing the rote "loud, stereotypical, black woman" shtick, it's old and not done well.

she already has some race backlash as well.

Whoever greenlit this idea and this cast deserves a hard kick to the nuts.

I think McCarthy is worth avoiding this for, if the premise wasn't already reason enough. The only thing that could get me in a seat with this cast is a Ramis cameo, but tough luck for them.

I've been developing a crush on Kristen Wiig ever since I watched the Skeleton Twins. But I absolutely despise everything that has Melissa McCarthy in it, i seriously can't stand her humor (or lack of)

Um, Ladies, I've got a ghost that needs your bustin'. Can I call you?

God. Awful. Really? I hate McCarthy/Wiig and who are the other two?! No talent here whatsoever. I'll admit this will sell tickets because people are morons and somehow just agree with Hollywood that McCarthy/Wiig are funny because women audience members are so desperate to prove women are just as funny as men (which I already agreed with without being forcefed those two). How about this: Bill Murray: Aubrey Plaza Harold Ramis: Emma Stone Dan Akroyd: Amanda Seyfried Ernie Hudson: Meagan Good If you've seen Parks & Rec, you know Plaza's character in that is already a female Peter Venkman (an I don't give a shit goof). Emma Stone played a good science nerd in TASM reboots and Amanda Seyfried looks like a believable nerd like Akroyd in GB...plus she'll star in Ted 2 so she'll be known soon for her comedy. And Megan Good was great in Anchorman 2 as a badass. I might've seen this lineup opening night. Now I kind of hope North Korea attacks this movie to ban it just to save everyone else.

Love it! I hate people who can stand a new version of you beloved movies. It's not like the new version going to make disappear the original one. Ghostbusters is one of my favorites movies ever, and that kind of humor is missed, and i love how the concept could be presented to a new generation. Besides, Wiig and McCarthy are real funny women. McKinnon is outstanding in comedy love her in SNL. Weren't the original ghostbusters (Murray and Aykroid) part of SNL? so chosing two girls from the same show, seems logical to me. If it turns not to be a great movie, i'll just put my (original) Ghostbusters blu-ray and life will go on.

Now that would be a movie.

I feel bad for all the flack McCarthy gets, I've heard a few interviews with her and she seems like a nice, 'normal' person just having fun in Hollywood who happens to be given incredibly annoying parts. The film still looks terrible and of course "she didn't have to take the role" but some of you sound like one more bad joke and you're gonna personally hunt her down.

Wow. Really? Yeesh. Sadly, I'll generally watch anything Dinklage is in. Also, Kate McKinnon wielding a proton pack seems like something I'd want to see. Definite rental though.
