The Odyssey

What do you do after earning boatloads of money for Lionsgate making three Hunger Games movies? You adapt Homer's Odyssey of course! Deadline is reporting that Lionsgate has put a brand new version of The Odyssey on the "fast track" for director Francis Lawrence following his work on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 this fall. In fact, they've gone all out bringing the whole team back, including producer Nina Jacobson (Hunger Games, Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and writer Peter Craig (The Town, Mockingjay Part 1 & 2, Top Gun 2, Hunter Killer), along with Francis Lawrence. Ten bucks says Jennifer Lawrence is going to be cast in this one somewhere. But it sounds like this will be quite something once they pull it off.

In the report, Deadline mentions that this was pitched directly to Francis Lawrence by Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig, who "pitched it to Lawrence in Paris while they worked on the Hunger Games finale." It seemingly grabbed the interest of everyone, as they're moving fast to make this next. "The plan is to begin production early next year, right after the filmmakers complete promotion of Mockingjay - Part 2." Get the ships ready, it's time to take another voyage with Odysseus. I'm certainly curious to see this with so much enthusiasm behind it, maybe they'll really go all out and bring us something spectacular, befitting the true title of "epic" and hopefully not at all anything like Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings.

Homer's Odyssey has been adapted a few times before, with Kirk Douglas starring in the 1954 film Ulysses, and there's the made-for-TV movie of The Odyssey in 1997 starring Armand Assante, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. Perhaps this new one will be a big budget, all-out epic take on the story of Odysseus's voyage home after the Trojan War, though we'll have to keep an eye out for updates from here. Stay tuned for more.

That tv mini series was so epic! I haven't watched it in years and I am sure it was not all that, but damn, I remember watching it as a kid with my dad and thinking this was the coolest! // I am not down with this new one with Lawrence. WHERE IS OUR JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS movie? I need some golden fleece!

Jason and the Argonauts most definitely! And I want to see a remake of the Sinbad movies (particularly his seventh voyage where we see the dragon and cyclops fight)!

The Odyssey with ARMAND ASSANTE?! Oh I need to see that! I might just go watch some Judge Dredd right now. As for this, just don't modernize it.

I've been wondering when we'd finally be getting a new, updated "Odyssey". So it's about time. I just hope it goes over better than the "Clash of the Titans" franchise.

Even if there is no official connection, it would be cool as hell if they had Sean Bean play Odysseus, reprising his role from 'Troy'.

Chris Groves on Apr 9, 2015

That would be quite something, though it would need to be more grounded and not over the top to gel with Troy. I think a middle ground could be reached and it would be an epic follow up to Troy. We can bet it ain't going to happen though

Since there won't be any "real" connection, as that was a WB movie and this is Lionsgate...the casting of Sean Bean alone would be enough of a nod for me, they don't need to make it a flat out sequel or match the 'tone' for me to enjoy the connection.

Chris Groves on Apr 9, 2015

Have Sean Bean look older and start spinning his story, as though looking back on his youth, tone can be changed and be more fantastical with a different actor. That would be a great subtle nod without being a sequel.

There you go, I think that would work well.

OOoooo neat! Not sure Lawrence will make a great siren though. ;P

Definition of epic. Wonder if it can really be done with justice.

13 long as it's not a comedy.
