Martin Freeman Joins the Cast of Marvel's 'Captain America: Civil War'
Nygaard is going geeky. It has been officially announced by Marvel Studios at Marvel.com that acclaimed actor Martin Freeman will be taking a role in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War movie, to be directed by brothers Anthony & Joe Russo. This is yet another sequel to Captain America following The Winter Soldier last year, but it also expands the universe by being the first segue into the "Civil War" era. No exact details are specified regarding the character he'll be playing, so unfortunately anything else will have to remain a mystery for the time being. Aside from Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, the Civil War cast may also include Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo and Chadwick Boseman. So who is everyone?
Here's the quote regarding Martin Freeman's casting included in the news at Marvel.com:
"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," said "Captain America: Civil War" Producer Kevin Feige. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
Martin Freeman recently gained a huge following for his performances on BBC's "Sherlock" as Dr. Watson, and FX's "Fargo" as Lester Nygaard, not to mention playing Bilbo in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, which just wrapped up last year. He also appeared in Edgar Wright's The World's End, The Eichmann Show and is in the upcoming Fun House. Any ideas who he might be playing in Civil War? Word is that Daniel Brühl is playing an antagonist of some sort, so maybe Freeman will join him? Or he is destined for a role as a regular human being? We'll have to see. Marvel Studio's Captain America: Civil War arrives in theaters starting May 6th, 2016 next summer. We'll keep watch for more updates now that Age of Ultron is playing.
I must say I did not see this coming. He is fantastic though.

Bruhl is Zemo, so will Freeman be MODOK?
Tuomas Lassila on May 5, 2015
If the MCU actually debuts MODOK with whoever, I'd be a happy camper. Though it would be very interesting to see Freeman take the role. Totally out of left field.

Just what we need. A Marvel Superhobbit. Although it would be a shame if this delays his work on the brilliant BBC Sherlock series.

The MCU continues to collect recognizable faces from films I enjoy.

Love it, Hate his Hobbit LOVE LOVE LOVE his Watson!!!

I'm assuming they need someone who frowns a lot.

Wouldn't surprise me if he then crossed over in Dr. Strange. 🙂
NarcolepticNinja on May 5, 2015
LOL! I bet Feige just got him because he is a fanboy!! Cool though. I would do the same thing if I were him.

Once they cast Dr. Strange I knew it was only a matter of time. I don't think Cumberbatch is contractually allowed to do big movies without Freeman.
Chocolate Supra on May 5, 2015
Maybe he's Speedball? Though I'd prefer he play the same character he was in Fargo. Love that accent.

I think that Freeman will be Union Jack!
Chris Hunter on May 6, 2015
I just want anyone to be Taskmaster 🙁
Tyrell Antonio on May 6, 2015
Awesome! I bet Feige just got him because he is a super fan!~
DAVIDPD on May 6, 2015
I don't know anything about the comic books, but I thought Civil War would be a cool opportunity to make a Marvel film with no villain, just the two sides.
OfficialJab on May 6, 2015
i know some things about comicbooks and the villains hopefully should be minor, BUT remember it is still a captain america movie so the story will be steve rogers centric

Freeman and Cumberbatch in the MCU?? Ultra dry Brit overload! It would be sweet if they worked together on Dr. Strange.
TheOct8pus on May 6, 2015
He would be a perfect Reed Richards 🙁
