"A thinking robot could be the end of mankind!" Sony Pictures has unveiled the second trailer for Neill Blomkamp's third sci-fi feature, titled Chappie, about a young robot being raised in a violent world. This is the second trailer we've seen following the first teaser for Chappie, and it has a completely different tone, focusing on the comedy that leads to the tragedy in the end. At least they're not holding back showing the social-political angle. Dev Patel stars, with Die Antwoord's Yo-Landi & Ninja plus Sharlto Copley as Chappie. We also get a few more glimpses of the bad guys: Hugh Jackman with a mullet, and Sigourney Weaver. This looks really, really good - even after Elysium I'm still excited for Blomkamp's latest creation.
Here's the second official trailer for Neill Blomkamp's Chappie, originally from Entertainment Weekly:
Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there's one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. Chappie is the third film written and directed by South African sci-fi auteur Neill Blomkamp, following up his films Elysium and District 9 previously. The script was co-written by Terri Tatchell, based on Blomkamp's short Tetra Vaal. Filming took place down in South Africa last year, with a cast including rappers Die Antwoord and Hugh Jackman. Sony Pictures has Blomkamp's Chappie set for release starting on March 6th, 2015 next year. Thoughts?

This is quite the comedy... But seriously this looks every bit as good as District and elysium.

I'm liking this trailer much more than the first. Gives a better feel to the actual story. And it has a solid 'District 9' vibe to it.

My lips are Chappie... But seriously. I'm gonna go see this. It look very emotional and gritty.

Damn those two trailers for Chappie present different movies. Hoping it is more like D9 and not like Elysium. Loved D9, liked Elysium. Blomkamp sure knows have to make "living" effects 🙂

Totally! His visuals are flawless even if the movie (Elysium) is flawed.

I liked the first trailer. Introduced us to Chappie and where he comes from. This one is a well crafted one. This trailer highlights the story and fleshes out the other characters. Though I do wish that I hadn't watched this trailer. I would have loved to see this story unfold on the big screen.

Been looking forward to this film. I feel like it'll be more like D9 then Elysium, though I enjoyed both, I definitely thought D9 was the better of the two.

First time I've heard that one. But ok. This does look great. Can't wait to see it. Great acting by Sharlto Copley. I'm assuming he does the mo-cap for Chappie as well as the voice.

D9 beat Elysium. And this will probably beat it too. Elysium was just a 6/10 for me.

well, this looks bettere than first trailer, but still repetitive in many ways ...

that's cause it's a trailer.

of course. But, we all have some experiences with trailers, don't we? And that means that the end-result can be even worse than I said. So, I took my liberty and wrote what I wrote. You don't have to agree, but I'm a kinda pessimistic about the quality of the whole narrative ...

Looks like a blatant mash-up of Robocop and Short Circuit painted with Blomkamp's repetitive style used on D-9 and Elysium.

At first, the premise (which is blatantly taken from Robocop) looked like it could successfully lead the movie somewhat into the direction of a grittier but funnier robot-version of E.T. Now, instead, this trailer shows that this pretty ridiculous concept is supposed to be the base for a pompous, emotional action spectacle with cardboard cut-out villains and heroes.... Sorry, I hoped Blokamp would try something new with his filmmaking talents, but this looks like another Elysium at best.

And the shot revealing that Hugh Jackman is spying on the protagonists with binoculars is hilarious. All he needs is a curly mustache and curse them while shaking his fist.

I have had booty juice that was more fun that watching that sad remake of robocop and short circuit. I hope this movie tanks, badly

Interesting. If this was his first go, I would be psyched, but am still pretty excited, just tempering my expectations...a lot.

District 9 is my favourite film but Elysium was utter trash. I'm really not sure about this. The crazy band of cyber punks that he hooks up with and all the fist touching seem pretty cliched. I'm also perplexed how the first trailer made it out to be this life enriching, you can be anything, TV talent show sentimentality seeking nonsense but now the concept has completely changed to this action packed, oppressive movie. This film doesn't have a clue what it is meant to be. It's like the studio thought "we've got the director of D9, Sigourney Weaver, Hugh Jackman and the guy from Slumdog - how can we fail" but didn't bother to think about what the actual film was about or what it's core direction was. Like they assumed that simply putting the ingredients together and throwing money at it would make a good movie. You think they would have learned their lesson as exactly the same thing happened with Elysium. I'm sorry Neil, you showed such great promise with your 9 minute live action Halo film and with District 9 but you are now drowning in a sea of empty, noisy vacuous projects that are wasting and diminishing your talents. Take a long break, go play some Xbox, watch some 80's movies and re-find the egde that you once had.
