Natalie Portman Cast in Marielle Heller's Next Project on Ginsburg
One of the films we've been supporting ever since it first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival is a little gem called The Diary of a Teenage Girl (Ethan's review), which Sony Pictures Classics is releasing later this year. Well, the director of that film, Marielle Heller (seen left above), is a very talented filmmaker who has already landed her next big directing gig. Deadline reports that Heller is set to direct a project called On The Basis Of Sex for Focus Features, and the exciting news is that she has secured Natalie Portman for the lead role. Whoa! Portman is now (hopefully) going to be working with two of the very best up-and-coming filmmakers out there - Alex Garland and Marielle Heller. I couldn't be happier about this news.
In On The Basis Of Sex, Natalie Portman will play Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, based on a script that follows Ginsburg "as she face[s] numerous obstacles to her fight for equal rights throughout her career." Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by then-President Clinton, becoming only the second female justice (after Sandra Day O'Connor). Written by Daniel Stiepleman, the script was on the 2014 Black List and may now be going into production with Heller and Portman in the mix. Deadline even specifically mentions it could be shooting sometime this year. "That would put it ahead of Alex Garland's sci-fi project Annihilation, for which Portman has been rumored." Sounds good to me if she can do both. If these are her next two projects following a Terrence Malick movie (see that one too), then no problem at all.
From here we'll have to keep an eye out for updates on both projects she's involved in, but I'm just happy that talented filmmakers are partnering with very talented actresses to tell interesting stories. That's what cinema should always be about, and the least I can do is still support those films when they come around.
Yawn Yawn, Ginsburg was the 2nd Female Justice BFD. This will Bomb.

Seems like all this project needs is a good trailer to get people excited about it. I know it sounds boring, but there are law freaks out there who love this kind of stuff.
