Studio Ghibli - IFC Center

Attention Studio Ghibli fans! The IFC Center in New York City is hosting yet another round of Studio Ghibli retrospective screenings through December. In honor of the upcoming re-release of Studio Ghibli's 1991 film Only Yesterday, directed by Isao Takahata, GKids is helping them show six of the best Ghibli films on the big screen. Only Yesterday will be re-opening with an English language re-release in theaters this January/February. Leading up to that release, the IFC Center will show the films Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaä, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. If you're a Studio Ghibli / Miyazaki fan like I am, every opportunity to see these films on the big screen is worth considering.

According to the info on IFC Center's website, this is the list of films they're showing this time (they did a full-on retrospective back in 2012, too). Screenings start up this weekend and run throughout next week.

Castle in the Sky (1986) - Monday, December 14 - Tuesday, December 15

Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - Sunday, December 13

My Neighbor Totoro (1988) - Friday, December 11 - Thursday, December 17

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) - Sunday, December 13 - Wednesday, December 16

Princess Mononoke (1997) - Friday, December 11 - Monday, December 14

Spirited Away (2001) - Friday, December 11 - Sunday, December 13

Thanks to The Playlist for the tip. Info from IFC: "In collaboration with GKIDS, we're pleased to present the return of our smash-hit retrospective of films from Japan's famed Studio Ghibli animation house. Don’t miss your chance to see some of the greatest films of all time." The info does also say that most films "will be presented in both subtitled and English dubbed versions" - so check the film's listing when you're buying tickets on the IFC Center website. The original retrospective in 2012 had about 10 other films from the Ghibli filmography, so hopefully they add a few more through the rest of the month. Castle in the Sky and My Neighbor Totoro are my favorites, along with Howl's and Spirited Away. I want to go see all of them in the theater! They're worth it. Bring a friend and (re)discover the magic of Studio Ghibli's wonderful stories.

I just watched THE CAT RETURNS. It was short, but definitely gave off serious SPIRITED AWAY VIBES. // They should knock of HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE for something else like GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES.
