Jennifer Lawrence in Joy

"Don't ever think that the world owes you anything - because it doesn't." 20th Century Fox has debuted the first official trailer for David O. Russell's new film Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy. David O. also reunites with Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper (the same trio from both Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle previously), plus the cast includes Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, and Virginia Madsen. Lawrence plays Joy Mangano, a young single mother of three who becomes a successful businesswoman after inventing the Miracle Mop. This is a lovely trailer that looks like it may even be better than David O. Russell's past few films, if that's even possible. No matter what I'm in. Fire this up.

Here's the first official trailer for David O. Russell's Joy, direct from 20th Century Fox's YouTube:

Joy, both written and directed by David O. Russell, tells the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman (Lawrence) who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Like David O. Russell's previous films (The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love. Arrives in theaters on Christmas Day, December 25th, this year.

Would Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawerence just get hitched already. They are inseparable. Looks like an interesting story.

Looks sweaty and greasy.

This looks like it has some character. Will watch.

Trailer did NOTHING for me...and David O Russel needs to switch up his actors....this looks like Silver Linings + American Hustle

Trey on Jul 15, 2015

NOTHING? Get Hollywood on the line! We've got some work to do in the edit bay. This is a teaser. It's showing all the people and interesting moments. We're not supposed to know what the story is. We're supposed to be curious. If it didn't do anything for you, then perhaps you should consider the fact that David O. Russell isn't doing this for you in particular. He owes you nothing, so don't act like his trailer editor failed you. Not every movie is going to please you. Even from a director you typically enjoy. And many directors have actors they work well with. It's fun to see their range of their abilities under the direction of the same person. Look at Scorsese and DiCaprio, P.T. Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Nolan and Michael Caine. If this looks like SLP and American Hustle, then maybe you're noticing a directing style. He's directing films at a faster pace, and he seems to have found his voice.

A 2 minute teaser? And why are you so upset at my own opinion that you wrote four paragraphs? Sit down and shut up

Trey on Jul 15, 2015

You tell 'em, Trey! Too many people on this site can't handle it when someone dislikes what they like. Having said that, I'm with you on this one. In fact, I hated, hated Silver Linings and American Hustle. Used to like Jennifer Lawrence too after her first two films, now she's become one of 'them' to

It's alot of pretentious guys on here...they make me laugh at their backseat movie analysis that's supposed to be taken as gospel.

Trey on Jul 16, 2015

Perhaps you're right. I see it more as there is a lot of what Orwell described as 'group think' on this site and if one goes against the grain of that group think the people react rather harshly and if they themselves have been slighted in some manner. Very strange. Myself, I like it when someone such as yourself, has the courage of their convictions and doesn't need a group to validate their perceptions and opinions. Excellent stuff, Trey. Thanks for your comment(s).

dude it's ok if you have terrible taste and no ability to recognize quality cinema when you see it. you have that right.

davidshaw on Jul 15, 2015

Whoa David, who crowned you the One who knows it all? I happen to think your taste in movies is seriously lacking in taste and the ability to recognize quality cinema. Sorry bub, but you opened yourself up to this with your kinda rude reply to Trey who just stated an opinion. From reading your posts, you seem to like the movies made for the masses. That's hardly quality cinema as you chose to state it. To like Silver Lining Dogshit and American Bullshit and this whole team of actors indicates to me your accusation towards Trey...that being, 'having terrible taste and no ability to recognize quality cinema when you see it'... is, in fact, required in order to like this schlock. This is just my opinion, which I have the right to not only possess, but to express. These movies by O'Russell, to me and to others in my crowd of friends, are light-weight, shallow and vapid nonsense. As one good friend of mine simply stated about these movies...'that's not the way it is'. In other words, they are false presentations of life in order to manipulate the audiences with maudlin and sentimental emotions to make everybody feel all fuzzy and good. Nothing wrong with that, if you like being lied to. You see, man's floor is another man's ceiling. Everybody has the you stated re: Trey. He was on the mark've missed it. But hey, to each his own. There are many who agree with you and there are many who agree with me and in the end....who the f**k cares? Except for one major, major fact....I am right...and you are It just might be you who has terrible taste and no ability to recognize quality cinema when you see it and can't see trash for what it is. You too have that right. No offense intended. Take care, buddy. No reply necessary either. Your floor is my ceiling so what's the point?

Am I the only person that absolutely loved, I heart Huckabees but nothing else O Russel has done?

Getting a strong Coen Brothers, FARGO vibe. DIG.

Meh. This dude is so overrated. I dont get it.

looks mediocre middle brow trying too hard just like his last "films"

dr pepper on Jul 15, 2015

Oscar bait and the trailer did nothing for me.

Firefly15 on Jul 16, 2015

Looks interesting, if for no other reason than I love Joy's "Huggable Hangers" that she's most famous for. But doubt I'll spend more than the $7.50 for the pre-noon show.

VAharleywitch on Jul 16, 2015

Looks incredibly dull and boring.
