Tyrese Gibson Really, Desperately Wants to Be New 'Green Lantern'

Tyrese Gibson as Green Lanter

We've got plenty of time until we get a new version of Green Lantern from Warner Bros. Pictures. A reboot of the DC Comics superhero was announced with the rest of the DC cinematic universe plans, but it won't arrive until June 19th, 2020, and that's just a release date, which can easily change as time passes. But that hasn't stopped people from thinking about who should put on the ring, though it depends on whether Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner is the hero. But still, one actor is lobbying hard for the role, and that's Tyrese Gibson, one of the stars of the Fast & Furious franchise. Look below!

Gibson began hyping himself for the role almost a week ago, so maybe he knows something we don't about casting. It wouldn't be out of the question since there's a chance that Green Lantern may pop up in Justice League, which arrives in two parts on November 17th, 2017 and June 14th, 2019. Gibson wouldn't be the first Fast & Furious franchise to head into comic book territory since Gal Gadot is Wonder Woman, Dwayne Johnson is in Shazam and Vin Diesel is Groot (with the hope of an Inhumans role too). Gibson doesn't really have the star power to lead Green Lantern, but we'll see what happens. Thoughts?

I don't think he is right for the role. I'm not saying he is BAD, per say but I would very well much see anyone else. I think Idris would be a good casting call.

Franklin Carpio on Jan 29, 2015

Agreed - I'd rather see Idris. BUT, he's in his mid-40s, so possibly not a lot of time to get a franchise going. Since GL isn't slated to pop until 2020, that puts Idris at 50+. Bit long in the tooth to headline an action franchise that is likely to be interconnecting w/ other films. Only having about 6 months off before time to bulk up & suit up/shoot a film is part of the reason that Chris Evans wants to get away from acting as Cap.

VAharleywitch on Jan 29, 2015

Completely agree. I didn't know that about Chris but can see it. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I'm tired of seeing studios making horrible choices in casting and the DC universe in general. I think Ryan Reynolds would be great as Deadpool but should not of been Green Lantern. So I would be pretty let down seeing Gibson as GL.

Someone who speaks my language. I love it.

Isnt Tyrese 40s also or about to be?! Jesus Tyrese is a horrible actor! This urks me beyond belief. Praying to the alien gods they dont choose this guy to get the ring.

Rock n Rollllll on Jan 29, 2015

Idris: 42; Gibson: 36 Either way, unless DC/WB is gonna start popping GL into the other DCU films, a la MCUs crossovers/appearances, neither one of them is really going to be viable long-term by 2019 when GL would currently film.

VAharleywitch on Jan 29, 2015

Plus Irdris is under Marvel contract till 2017, JL comes out in 2017.

mooreworthy on Jan 29, 2015

Idris would be magnificent

Rock n Rollllll on Jan 29, 2015

He's already 42. Probably too old.

Panther2017 on Jan 31, 2015

Yeh get another nonactor, see how that pans out.

Brian Sleider on Jan 29, 2015

Don't know anything about GL, but I think he'd look silly in that role.

OfficialJab on Jan 29, 2015

Horrible fkn decision!

Rock n Rollllll on Jan 29, 2015

Love his passion, but I'd rather it be Derek Luke.

Xerxexx on Jan 29, 2015

Yeah, "A"for effort but he lacks depth. Would also love to see Michael Jai White.

mooreworthy on Jan 29, 2015

Michael Jai White???? DA FUCK????

Ervin Mitchell on Jan 29, 2015

Too old, already 47.

Panther2017 on Jan 31, 2015

Too old. He's already forty.

Panther2017 on Jan 31, 2015

"Green Lantern: Blackest Knight"

Astroboy3000 on Jan 29, 2015

If you're gonna go black then cast Idris

Bruiser on Jan 29, 2015

Idris doesn't look any fucking thing like Green Lantern dumb bitch

Ervin Mitchell on Jan 29, 2015

Are you implying Tyrese does?

blkstar on Jan 30, 2015

He looks just like the Green Lantern from the new Justice League cartoons and some of the comics

Ervin Mitchell on Jan 30, 2015

So let me get this straight, you would rather have Tyrese play Green Lantern, knowing he can't act or even come close to representing John Stewart, all because he looks like the cartoon version? Ryan Reynolds looked the part, so tell me this, why did that movie do so bad?

blkstar on Jan 31, 2015

First off, Ryan Reynolds DID NOT look the part. He should have waited it out to play Deadpool the role that is truly for him instead of making that terrible Green Lantern and second off Tyrese is a good actor. Not phenomenal but good which is all you need for a superhero movie. The movie did so bad because it was TERRIBLE....that's why. You must not have seen Baby Boy or Four Brothers....smh. Idris is a hot name but he is not Green Lantern.

Ervin Mitchell on Jan 31, 2015

No one cares about Baby Boy or Four Brothers. I've seen both and out of his entire career you can only name two films he was good in. Idris has been in a number of huge title films and delivers on point each time. His look is more like John Stewart than baby boy ever will be so your argument is invalid.

blkstar on Jan 31, 2015

We can all agree hes not right for the part yes? I don't need to argue with anyone on this?

blkstar on Jan 30, 2015

Worse than the current casting?
