"Trees and people used to be good friends." Something to warm your heart today, a video tribute to the legendary animation master Hayao Miyazaki. Vimeo user "dono" has posted his video tribute (found via One Perfect Shot) that looks back at many of the characters and movies that Miyazaki has brought us. I am a huge Hayao Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli fan myself, and I'm always happy to bring some extra attention to their work, especially everything they've made before (considering they're not really making any new films at the moment). I like the way this tribute brings together so many of the memorable characters from Miyazaki's movies. My favorite film is still Castle in the Sky, and Totoro, but this entire tribute makes me smile. Enjoy.
From dono on Vimeo: Tribute to Hayao Miyazaki. Music by Joe Hisaishi. Made with Blender, Gimp, Octane and Natron. The art seen above is a tribute done by Amien Juugo, found on deviantArt here. Back in 2013, Hayao Miyazaki announced that he was retiring after finishing The Wind Rises, and Studio Ghibli has since stopped making animated feature films after the release of When Marnie Was There, though they are still working on other things. This was a lovely tribute to many of Miyazaki's great films: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, NausicaΓ€ of the Valley of the Wind and Ponyo. It is always a perfect day to watch a Miyazaki movie.

This makes me so sad. Miyazaki has a pretty much a flawless record when it comes to hits. To think the man is done making films is nothing short of an artistic travesty. A major hat tip to Joe Hisaishi, the music composer, must be given as well. His scores bring an amazing amount of emotion to Miyazaki's work.

I feel slightly sad Miyazaki isn't making movies, but really his collection of films are so good, it doesn't bother me so much. We know he still creates work every day, be it watercolours or story writing and that make me happy. He's up there with Moebius or Otomo for me as incredible artists capable of creating unique universes. π

Wind Rises is one of my favourite movies. They also worked with Namco one time on a video game, Ni No Kuni - I always wished his studio had adapted their game Eternal Sonata as a movie.
