Alan Rickman

Some sad news to report on the same morning as the Academy Awards nominations. Actor Alan Rickman has died at the age of 69, after a short fight with cancer. This news also comes a few days after the death of legendary musician and actor David Bowie, who also passed away from cancer at age 69. Rickman was already a succesful actor on stage in the 1980's, but rose to prominence with unforgettable on screen roles like Hans Gruber in the original Die Hard, the Metatron in Dogma, Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest and of course Snape from the Harry Potter series. The BBC reports the news directly from his family. "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends."

Rickman was a very talented actor, beloved for both is stage and screen performances. In addition to the roles mentioned, Rickman appeared in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Sense and Sensibility as Colonel Brandon, the voice of Marvin in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Disney's Alice in Wonderland, Lee Daniels' The Butler as Ronald Reagan, CBGB, A Little Chaos and Eye in the Sky. Rickman was born in London, and started out in theatre, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and eventually on TV dramas like "The Barchester Chronicles" in the 1980s. No Academy Awards, but he did win a Golden Globe.

It's always sad to report on the death of an actor not only loved as a person, but loved for all of his roles, too.

sad news. I loved rickmans voice and delivery of lines.

That's a bummer. It's sad for his family to never have him around and sad for his fans to never enjoy his brilliant acting again. My brother in law just died of cancer a few weeks ago. F*ck cancer!

1st Lemmy, then Bowie, now Rickman. Latter 2 both 69. Hopefully the "trio" is completely, cuz Time Curry's 69 now too. Another sad day, too soon. =(

Was a trio already with Bowie if you count Scott Weiland

Ahh yes, true, forgot about him =(. I quite enjoyed STP, but still wouldn't put him on par with these 3. That's just me though.

bat0u on Jan 14, 2016

I agree, but his voice and contribution to music cannot be denied.

Rough week, geez.

By Grabthar's hammer, you shall be...missed. Hopefully he got his detonators back. Loved all of his roles, especially in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as Marvin. R.I.P good sir.

well said. hopefully wherever he is, he is canceling Christmas and cutting out hearts - with a spoon. one of those actors who, if their name was attached, i would watch the film without question. often as it meant he was outperforming the 'star'. RIP, sir.

son_et_lumiere on Jan 14, 2016

Wholeheartedly agree, truly a sad day.

Why a spoon, cousin?

grimjob on Jan 14, 2016

because it's dull, it'll hurt more! from anyone else, that would have been a silly line, but Rickman was good enough to *own* it, and have Costner try and edit his role down in post. he will be most sorely missed.

Shoot that glass Hans..... 🙁

The way he delivered lines, his inflections, his tone. Just fantastic.

MAWG on Jan 14, 2016

Too soon and really sad, he was in so many different movies and always made an impact. Real shame.

Carpola on Jan 14, 2016

Completely shattered. Grew up with his movies. What a loss.

Sascha Dikiciyan on Jan 14, 2016

Good bye Alan Rickman. You have given the world so much in your performances.

DAVIDPD on Jan 14, 2016

Great talent and actor. He is my age. He will be missed I liked anything he played in. Jimi Hendrix once said "if I don't see you no more in this world, I'll see you in the next one and don't be late".

eagle keeper on Jan 14, 2016

Damn shame. RIP Mr. Rickman.

Brandon on Jan 14, 2016

Damn shame. Always smiled when he came on screen. Always will.

I know right!? And after he cancelled Christmas!

So long and thanks for all the fish! Sigh. I think you ought to know I'm feeling very depressed. It's like somebody cut out our hearts, with a spoon.
