Ghost in the Shell Teasers

"What are you?" Paramount has debuted a series of mysterious 15-second teasers for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell live-action movie, starring Scarlett Johansson as The Major. Each teaser has a tiny snippet of footage and provides a very interesting introduction to this movie. Three of them feature Johansson, in iconic scenes that anime fans will likely recognize. One of them features Takeshi Kitano playing Daisuke Aramaki looking pissed as hell firing a revolver then dumping the shells. And one features a mysterious kimono woman with a mask, potentially the villain who wants to sabotage Hanka Robotic's AI technology. I have to admit - I really love these teasers, they're unique and the perfect way to introduce the world to this movie. The way they glitch in and out is awesome. I want more promos like this. "This is just the beginning."

Update - a fan has made an edit of all of the footage so far in one video (see the original teasers below):

Here's the first five mysterious teasers for Rupert Sanders' Ghost in the Shell, direct from YouTube:

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property (first developed by Masamune Shirow), Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic's advancements in cyber technology. Ghost in the Shell the movie is being directed by Rupert Sanders, of Snow White and the Huntsman previously. The cast features Beat Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Kaori Momoi and Chin Han. The film was shot mostly in Wellington, New Zealand, and Weta will be providing VFX. Paramount is releasing Ghost in the Shell in US theaters starting on March 31st, 2017 early next year. Stay tuned for more updates. Your first impression?

Scarlett Johansson and Juliette Binoche? Ewwwwww....what skanks!! Thank God Beat Kitano (my namesake) is in it.... Seriously though, those promos are awesome.

I was expecting something close to Blade Runner cinematography... I will wait for a 30 seconds teaser. these 2 seconds teasers are annoying.

I was afraid they were going to be going with the pretentious route.

DAVIDPD on Sep 22, 2016

It feels like this movie should have come out 16 years ago, around the time The Matrix (hugely derivative of GITS) came out....sadly, this story is going to appear derivative of every post-Matrix sci-fi movie that's come out so far.

TheOct8pus on Sep 22, 2016

Why exactly? Equilibrium is one of those movies. Ghost in the Shell stands strong alone. Equilibrium doesn't...not even matrix :reloaded or revolutions. The philosophical treatment isnt even remotely the same.

ErrorSapiens on Sep 22, 2016

I can't even remember what Equilibrium was about...all I can remember is a Christian Bale fighting with some dudes in black suits. Matrix should have stayed a standalone movie that sufficed to itself. The whole story was told within the 2h or so. Reloaded and Revolutions was just a failed attempt to milk more money following the huge success of the Matrix. since then, the Wachowskis failed in bringing something on the same level of awesomeness as the Matrix. in fact, they failed in bringing something good...

Reloaded was pretty awesome.

Joblansky on Sep 22, 2016

Reloaded would be awesome only with a (re)load of LCD in our veins... ;D When you try to deconstruct a mythology, you ruin it. (Star Wars prequels) I don't care who or what is the IA behind the Matrix. the whole movie plays as a great philosophical thinking. The most important thing is the moon, not the finger that is pointing to it.

tarek on Sep 22, 2016

Equilibrium: Post-war Totalitarian "Utopia" where emotions were deemed to be the cause of war and violence. Citizens suppress emotions with mandatory pills; special task force used to catch people feeling; any form of art is outlawed. It's awesome, and the comparison to The Matrix is unfortunate.

thanks for refreshing my memory.

tarek on Sep 23, 2016

Ghost in the Shell SHOULD stand strong alone because it's a classic and it influenced many films in the early 2000's. However, my fear is that the GITS movie coming out is going to be (or at least perceived to be) derivative of The Matrix or Equilibrium, rather than the other way around.

TheOct8pus on Sep 22, 2016

yeah but you had the actually anime movie at the time, live action wouldn't have added much to it at the time especially when effects would have been far too costly. Now that special effects are at a level where you can throw in realistic looking cyborg prosthetics and other surreal elements at a tiny budget you can actually have live action that could do as much as the anime.

Dan Hibiki on Sep 22, 2016

I like the teasers. I didn't have much hope for a live-action film based on GitS, but this has me curious. It certainly looks good enough, but will it be a good movie?

Bl00dwerK on Sep 22, 2016

Exactly my thoughts...

Alex Billington on Sep 22, 2016

Someone's been having fun with the pile sort and glitch plugins. I'm sort of interested in watching this, visually it will probably be pretty good.

Carpola on Sep 22, 2016

Worst. Film. Promotion. Ever. I'm so sick of teasers for teasers for teasers. Just show me a full trailer. And NOT the whole friggin movie in the trailer too please. The one positive: The imagery looks similar to the original anime....

RAW_D on Sep 22, 2016

lol yeah because the one positive isn't more important....laff

Sascha Dikiciyan on Sep 22, 2016

Another whitewash movie..The movie going to be the biggest flop next year.

Outsider75 on Sep 22, 2016

Who cares? It's made in a country with a handful of Asian actors plus the opposite happens all the time. Do you think Japan flies in a bunch of western actors when they do a production of say Shakespeare. SJW's should actually complaining about the real problems of the world...minorities getting shot? Meh. White actor cast as a non-white character ZOMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joblansky on Sep 22, 2016

who got a problem with white people?

ScotchLuv on Sep 26, 2016

Yeah, the racist type like you. I guess your a big fan of DragonBall :Evolution

Outsider75 on Sep 26, 2016

22 someone lost his temper. Why don't you burn couple crosses and wear white pointed hoodie.

Outsider75 on Sep 26, 2016

As anybody here, I don't have doubts regarding visual part but that looks way too much style over substance. And, to be honest, S. Johansson is not someone I could, at first, identify with the original...

Dude on Reddit cut together a less annoying version of these clips:
