Iñárritu, McCarthy, McKay, Miller & Scott Score DGA Awards Noms

As we continue into the awards season in early 2016, more guilds are announcing their nominees/awards for the outstanding films of 2015. Next up is the Directors Guild of America, one of the heavy weights and usually strong indicators of what's to come. The DGA announced nominees for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film 2015, and they've chosen a near perfect set of nominees this year. To top it off, they announced an entirely new category - outstanding directorial achievement by first-time filmmakers, featuring some of my own favorite films this year: The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Son of Saul, Ex Machina, and The Gift. It's fantastic to see these films by budding filmmakers highlighted by the DGA. Full list below.

The nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film 2015 (alphabetically):

› Adam McKay for The Big Short
› George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road
› Ridley Scott for The Martian

The nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for 2015 (alphabetically):

› Fernando Coimbra for A Wolf at the Door
› Joel Edgerton for The Gift
› Alex Garland for Ex Machina
› Marielle Heller for The Diary of a Teenage Girl
› László Nemes for Son of Saul

Congrats to all of this year's nominees! "What makes this year different is the unbridled ambition of the five nominated films – in theme, in production, in visual imagination," said DGA President Paris Barclay. “What makes this year the same is that the films were all chosen by the directors’ peers, and it’s clear our members love when people use their vision and skill to push the media to new heights. Congratulations to all of the nominees for their incredible work." This is Iñárritu's fourth nomination; he won last year with Birdman. Scott has also been nominated four times. I'm so happy, because these are some of my favorite films of the year, and truly some of the best filmmakers of the year - including even Marielle Heller (I love her film), and Alex Garland, and László Nemes, these three made such great films. So did everyone else nominated - Ridley, George Miller, McKay!, McCarthy and Iñárritu again. The DGA always makes some strong selections, and I'm happy with their choices, though I should also point out some of my other favorite directors: Cary Fukunaga for Beasts of No Nation, James Ponsoldt for The End of the Tour, Sebastian Schipper for Victoria, Danny Boyle for Steve Jobs, and Deniz Gamze Ergüven for Mustang. The documentary director award nominations will be announced tomorrow.
