"What will you do when they catch you?" It's time! Disney has finally unveiled the official teaser trailer for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the very first spin-off set in the Star Wars universe developed after Lucasfilm was bought by Disney. Last year we got The Force Awakens, this year it's Rogue One. Starring Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Jonathan Aris, Riz Ahmed & Alan Tudyk, Rogue One is about a group of rebels who set out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. This is only the first teaser, so don't expect too much to be revealed, but they do show quite a bit and it looks amazing. Love the music, all the visuals, bring it on.
Here's the first teaser trailer for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, via Disney's YouTube:
"Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe," says Kathleen Kennedy. Rogue One tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. It's being directed by English filmmaker Gareth Edwards, of the movies Monsters and Godzilla previously. The screenplay is credited to Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Golden Compass, Cinderella) based on a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta. Disney will release Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in theaters everywhere starting December 16th, 2016 this year. For even more Star Wars updates, click here. You in?

Will the goodie become a baddie? Oooooooooh. But lets get to the important stuff, how many new toys can I get from this movie for my chubby little man cave?
Carpola on Apr 7, 2016
4
how can you talk about toys? this is serious - many Bothans died to bring you this trailer. mind you, if they have *Bothan* toys...

I would have preferred a more intimate heist-film, but I'm very excited for some (actually) new stories in the SW-universe. Especially this one. Also, Felicity Jones looks like she might be a bad-ass character.
Snev De la Fontaine on Apr 7, 2016
8
A small team trying to pull of a difficult secret heist - which would mean the focus is more on small actions with high tension rather than epic conflict.
Snev De la Fontaine on Apr 7, 2016
9
Nice thought, but that would mean Disney/Lucasfilm would have to abandon the whole epic scope massive war backdrop that made them a zillion dollars in the previous movies. If it's going to be a grittier "grunt" level war movie with a bunch of flawed "specialists" brought together by a rebellion that has to use the volunteers they can get, I'm okay with it.
Kenneth on Apr 7, 2016

True. It also occurred to me that maybe a more concentrated heist film wouldn't make much use of the Star Wars universe's best and most recognizable elements.
Snev De la Fontaine on Apr 8, 2016
11
They are a small team (count em) and it is a secret heist. Obviously this is star wars so yes at some point it will get Epic. If you notice at the end of the teaser she's wearing an Empire outfit. Meaning she will sneak in so there you will get your tension stuff taken care of.

The vibe is just different from something I would have preferred. Still looks fun to me, but in a somewhat different way is all.

I was also expecting something more like a spy movie. But hopefully this is a bit more original and different than Force Awakens. (not bashing FA)
ProjectionistHP on Apr 7, 2016
14
The only thing wrong with FA was uninspired story, I agree.
Jon Odishaw on Apr 7, 2016

Hey, for me it looks like STAR WARS with a dollop of THE DIRTY DOZEN and THE GUNS OF NAVARONE...and that's not a bad thing at all, in my view.

THIS is how teaser trailers should look like! After a while a properly executed pitch. Well done guys, well done! Excited for December!!!

I get they wanna be different with no Jedi and it makes sense since Anakin killed pretty much all of them in Episode III but Obi-Wan is still alive and very young.. so you're trying to tell me he would not be involved in any form or fashion with trying to steal the death star plans and stop Vader?
steve on Apr 7, 2016
19
He went into HIDING....so no.
TheOct8pus on Apr 7, 2016
20
....also it's highly rumored that Darth Vader will be showing up to kick some ass....so there's your lightsaber action....
TheOct8pus on Apr 7, 2016
21
No, he's watching over Luke on Tatooine. Also why would you think Obi Wan was very young? Your timeline is way off. These events take place not too long before Star Wars so he wouldn't be much younger than he is in the original film. I'm pretty sure the film will end off with Leia getting the plans. As far as Jedi go, I'm thinking the old man who had the map to Luke from the beginning of the Force Awakens might play a part in this film as his younger self. He striked me as possibly once being a Jedi.

I also liked Godzilla. A lot.

I'll third that sentiment

That little bit of dialogue from Forest had so much conviction, it may turn out to be one of his best performances ever (including his future) and at the right time!

Ben Mendelsohn looks amazing! Donnie Yen too. Excited to see what role Mads has. I'm pumped all over again. I absolutely love that we going to get this feeling every year for the foreseeable future? Yay!!!
David Diaz on Apr 7, 2016
35
Shit this looks good. I love the way they combined two different star wars themes with the soundtrack. Amazing. I also love that theyre willing to make these movies with almost no A-listers. Also, I hate to be that guy who overanalyzes the new star wars trailer for bullshit that isnt there, but if you guys put on headphones and listen at like 1:27, when he says "what will you become," do you hear that really subtle Darth Vader breath???
jay on Apr 7, 2016
36
Yes, heard it. I'd be surprised if Vader doesn't show up in this.
David Diaz on Apr 7, 2016
37
I think its part JJs influence(the way he finds unknowns and makes them known) and part the fact that you dont need big actors when the brand star wars sells itself. Just because they arent going after big names doesnt mean they arent going after talent. Forest and Mads and Donnie are all as talented as any A lister.
Jon Odishaw on Apr 8, 2016
38
Looks good...but so did the Godzilla trailer which turned out not so good. So is every character lead in the new Star Wars future slate of films going to be the same white woman? What happened to diversity?
Have Hope on Apr 7, 2016
39
Oh c'mon? Don't start with the race crap. Sure the lead is a white woman but the rest of her crew couldn't be more diverse. Black, Hispanic, Chinese, Middle Eastern. Plus, Ep. 7 had a black male lead. Don't make problems where there isn't one.
David Diaz on Apr 7, 2016
40
Hey, I would just like diversity to include asian and black female leads, it's only been white females so far, which isn't diverse or different anymore
Have Hope on Apr 7, 2016
41
I get it. But having a female lead was a big jump from the first 3 which were completely male dominated. Even the prequels didn't have many prominent female characters. But I'm sure sure you'll get your wish at some point.
David Diaz on Apr 7, 2016
42
Same here. But I don't want them acting like Rey and this woman are great leaps forward in diversity. There white women who look like models in a lot of films and tv shows as leads now.
Have Hope on Apr 7, 2016
43
Indeed. I'd like to see more Jawas and more Bith. Notice how those guys don't ever get speaking roles? Just clicks and whistles and some snazzy music. And don't get me started on the token Wookie!
Taternuts222 on Apr 8, 2016
45
I saw a rumor that Jyn Erso might "become" Phasma?
mykeknight on Apr 7, 2016
46
Hadn't heard that one. But seeing as the trailer ended with her in a storm trooper outfit, I doubt they'd make it that obvious. Plus if they ever plan on showing Phasma with her helmet off, Gwendoline and Felicity look nothing alike.
David Diaz on Apr 7, 2016
47
It's so stupid kinda like before TFA people said Rylo Ren=Luke. Gwendoline is 2 heads taller than 5'3 Jyn so that alone makes this rumor invalid.

True dat.

Donnie Yen in a SW movie. I thought I'd never see the day. This looks good. However, Godzilla was absolute garbage. How someone get a gig like SW after making such a turd (Ok it made money because of its name) is beyond me. But I do believe in RO story. Very cool . Cast looks invested. Im in.
Sascha Dikiciyan on Apr 7, 2016
57
Godzilla had its moments, it sure wasn't garbage. Monster was pretty good too. Gareth has gifts as director, haven't just nailed anything yet...

It sure was in my opinion. Pure and simple cinema garbage. But you know One man's trash is another man's treasure. So knock yourself out.

59
this...is no...godzilla... Looks like they are going to get the rest of the money after I joked that TFA will make all of the money. What are they going to do with all that money, build their own Death Star...now that they got the plans?
Whichhalfofthewit on Apr 7, 2016
60
Wouldn't that be cool though. You can either go onto the Pirates of the Caribbean, or go on the DEATH STAR!!!!! Make it happen Disney.
Quanah on Apr 8, 2016

Monsters was very interesting movie, but Godzilla wasn't so bad either. Definitely much better than that atrocious version with Matthew Broderick.
shiboleth on Apr 7, 2016
62
Well, at least you're giving it a chance. I disagree with you about GODZILLA, but hell, film is art, and art is subjective--and that means we'll all have differences of opinion. And I agree about the cast--hell, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker and Felicity Jones? I'm in.
Scopedog on Apr 7, 2016

Godzilla was so disappointing. A boring and forgettable piece of shit! I hope Rogue One delivers. Don't fuck it up, Gareth Edwards!
BlubberNugget on Apr 7, 2016
64
Holy shit. I just realized that those shadow troopers that quick scene is them killing Luke's Aunt and uncle maybe? You can clearly see one of the farming poles in the BG and its burning. Maybe towards the end of RO after they stole the plans? It would be amazing to see that!

If all these Star wars movies are goingto look like this, I'm happy that disney will milk my money for the next years to come with these... And dat score... Excellent

I wonder if one must get some master degree in making star wars movies since this starts to look like standard procedure to make all star wars movie to look alike if not same. Other than that, I like seeing Forest Whitaker ...

Looks great and I love the fact that it stays true to the original movies. Great to see Donnie Yen giving hollywood another shot too. I loved the Force Awakens but I've got a funny feeling I just might like this one more.

Nailing It on every level. I know a lot of people will be irked with Jones taking center stage in this trailer, but they said it will be an ensemble piece. I am pumped for the minor characters: Donnie Yen, Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk!!~

Donnie Yen jedi style or not bad ass.

This almost looks better than TFA. Love the throwback uniforms and vehicles! Can't wait for bigger nerds than me to give the full half-hour breakdown of the trailer on Youtube.

Looks intriguing. The lead actress seems to the the Rogue One, since she has only One look for her character.

A lot of commentary about G. Edwards directing this after Godzilla. Star Wars is a multi-billion dollar industry far beyond what it was before managed by the powerhouse Disney. There will be more Star Wars films then we can handle, and there's only a limited number of directors to choose from. You can't have the same 3-4 directors pumping out a Star Wars film every year. If you think you'll be unsatisfied with some of the directing choices now, just wait until 10 years from now when most of these current directors will long since desire to get away from the money machine called Disney and direct something of there own volition. When that happens, the choices might be limited in the world of directors, especially if the new up-and-coming directors become influenced by this current group to stay away from the franchise due to Disney control over storylines, characters, shot selection, actors/actresses, etc. Personally, I'm just going to try and enjoy what is happening now. Who knows what the future may hold.

You can always attract the most artistic and brilliant directors to make huge budget movies like Star Wars. Why? Because making Spartacus for the studio is how Kubrick paid for the project HE wanted to make after. You want artistic freedom? Do a Star Wars and then you can do anything you want!

I mean, hell freaking yes. That cast. That director. That franchise. Stoked.
