Must Watch: Trailer for Kenneth Lonergan's 'Manchester by the Sea'
"If you really feel you can't take this on, you know… That's your right." Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea, a film many critics have been raving about since it first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Set in Massachusetts, this very emotional drama stars Casey Affleck as an uncle who has to help take care of a teenage boy, played by Lucas Hedges, when his father suddenly dies. Affleck and Hedges both give awards-worthy performances, but there's so much more to this exceptional film. The cast includes Kyle Chandler, Michelle Williams, Matthew Broderick, Gretchen Mol, Tate Donovan and Kara Hayward. This trailer doesn't give away too much, thankfully, but it does setup the story in an engaging way. I've seen the film and it's truly as great as everyone is saying.
Here's the first official trailer for Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea, originally from IMDb:
Raup's review on The Film Stage says "Lonergan brilliantly and steadily peels back the layers of anguish."
After the sudden death of Joe Chandler (Kyle Chandler), his younger brother Lee (Casey Affleck) is made legal guardian of his son Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Lee returns to his hometown and has to deal with both his separated wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community of North Shore. Manchester by the Sea is both written and directed by acclaimed American playwright/filmmaker Kenneth Longergan, of the films You Can Count on Me and Margaret previously. This is his third feature. The film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Amazon Studios & Roadside Attractions will release Manchester by the Sea in select theaters starting November 18th this fall. This is one of the best films of the year. See it.
Looks pretty incredible. Say what you will about Ben, but both Afflecks are stellar actors man. Those guys got some acting CHOPS.

Ok, that was scary. Don't do that again. Some of us are very sensitive people ...

I really like Michelle Williams in this. In fact, I like her in many other films. And I didn't know about this one, but now I am glad that I do. As for Casey Affleck, he seems better and better with every new film ...

This does look amazing but it's so hard to imagine a better role he had and crushed in Gone Baby Gone. He deserves a nod if this holds up...

Right, that was a good role. And I remember him in The Killer Inside Me. Scary character played well (the film itself not so much). As for this one, let's hope for best. But I somehow think the whole film is going to be a very good thing ...

Great trailer and looks like a promising film. Tate Donovan and Gretchen Mol both live in my neighborhood! And I brushed elbows with Kenneth Lonergan. Once. Briefly. 🙂

I have to see this. This looks and feels real. I love that.

I hate it when I see flattering phrases like " A Masterpiece" or " the best movie of this decade" covering a poster or polluting a trailer. Especially when they come from dubious critics. If I take these well-worn flattering words too seriously, I will need a stronger qualifying term to design what is really a masterpiece.

This looks quite good. When you can become emotionally invested in the characters based off the trailer and are yearning for more, that makes for some great cinema.....hopefully!
