Planet Unknown Short Film

Aren't they just adorable? This sci-fi short film titled Planet Unknown features two cute explorer robots discovering a new planet for the first time, attempting to figure out if there are enough resources to sustain life. Chinese writer & director Shawn Wang admits he was inspired by Wall-E, which is obvious with these robots, but that wasn't his only key inspiration for this CG animated short. "The idea started back in 2014 when Interstellar was released. I was deeply impressed by the movie and was inspired by the two robots TARS and CASE. The idea of intellectual robots exploring space developed from there." This isn't totally groundbreaking, but it is fun and does make you dream about the possibility of life on other planets. Enjoy.

Thanks to The Verge for the tip on this. Via Vimeo: "At the end of 21st century, mankind were facing global resource depletion. Space Rovers were sent out to find potential inhabitable planets." Planet Unknown is both written & directed by Shawn Wang, with all the animation, compositing, modelling and editing also done by Wang. The film features music and sound design by Echoic Audio, with a score composed by Sam Foster. Planet Unknown is Wang's passion project and also his graduation thesis film at Communication University of China. He worked on this on his own for 11 months, completing it this year. He lists all of his inspirations on Vimeo. You can see a behind-the-scenes video here. For more shorts, click here. Thoughts?

I recently rewatched TOY STORY and was appalled at how bad the visuals were. I know it was the first if its kind, but they were still shite. This film was amazing and yeah maybe in 20 twenty years it will also look shite, but damn, this is good stuff.

Hopefully the robots aren't gay so they won't offend our resident homophobe...Tarek.
