New International Trailer for Eva Green & Alicia Vikander's 'Euphoria'

Euphoria Trailer

"If you leave, I'll still do it." This is an intriguing film that may not show up in US theaters for quite some time. Euphoria is the latest film from Swedish filmmaker Lisa Langseth, her first English language feature, and it stars two incredible actors: Eva Green and Alicia Vikander. The story follows these sisters as they travel through Europe to a beautiful country mansion. At first we're not sure why they're going there, but soon discover that one of them wants to go there to end her life. The cast also includes the great Charlotte Rampling with a strong presence throughout, as well as Charles Dance, Mark Stanley, and Adrian Lester. This is our first look at a full trailer and I am very curious about this film, though the buzz seems to be mixed. I like the whole "freedom of choice" concept and I'm curious to see what revelations this contains.

Official US Trailer for Samuel Maoz's Award-Winning Film 'Foxtrot'

Foxtrot Trailer

"Did you know the foxtrot is a dance?" Sony Classics has finally unveiled an official US trailer for one of the best films of 2017, titled Foxtrot, which is Israel's main entry into the Academy Awards this year. Foxtrot premiered at the Venice, Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals and we posted a teaser trailer during its festival run. Now we finally get a full trailer and you can get a glimpse at this masterpiece. Foxtrot is about a family who must face the facts when their son is killed at a desolate military outpost. The film tells both sides of the story, starting with the parents. Featuring Lior Ashkenazi, Sarah Adler, Yonaton Shiray, and Shira Haas. I caught this in Venice and flipped for it (read my review), a phenomenal film with exceptional sound design, cinematography, performances, and an emotional rollercoaster of a story that you will never forget.

Full US Trailer for Studio Ponoc's Anime 'Mary and the Witch's Flower'

Mary and the Witch's Flower Trailer

"I mustn't give up… I made a promise…!" GKids has unveiled an official US trailer for the Japanese anime Mary and the Witch's Flower, made by Studio Ponoc. This film already opened in Japan in July, and we featured the Japanese trailers leading up to that release. Studio Ponoc is the spiritual successor to Studio Ghibli started by a bunch of former Ghibli animators. Their first film tells the story of a girl who discovers a broomstick and goes to a witches school only to learn that the animals are being kept in cages. Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, with music by Takatsugu Muramatsu, based on "The Little Broomstick". This trailer features English language voices, since it will be released for one night in theaters dubbed in English. Check it out below if you're still interested. The English language version features the voice talents of Ruby Barnhill (from Spielberg's The BFG), Kate Winslet, and Jim Broadbent. Still looks wonderful to me.

Watch: VFX Breakdown Video from Villeneuve's 'Blade Runner 2049'

Blade Runner 2049 VFX Breakdown

Get a load of this, movie fans. Whether you are happy with the movie or not, there's no denying that Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 is one of the most visually astounding movies of this year. Part of this is thanks to master cinematographer Roger Deakins and the entire crew who designed and developed the movie, building giant practical sets along with massive, complex lighting rigs. The other part of the visual experience comes from the extraordinary, seamless visual effects (aka VFX) that make the world complete. VFX studio Rodeo FX, based mostly out of Montreal, has released a breakdown video showing off their work on the movie. It also gives a behind-the-scenes look at how big all the sets were, and how much VFX work went on top of them to make it all seem so real. I love watching these kind of videos. Sit back, relax & enjoy.

Gerard Butler & 50 Cent in Final Trailer for Crime Film 'Den of Thieves'

Den of Thieves Trailer

"You're not the bad guys, we are." Is anyone excited to see this? STX Entertainment has revealed a second, final trailer for the action crime thriller titled Den of Thieves, also known as Criminal Squad in Europe, from writer/director Christian Gudegast. The movie is about a thief who gets trapped between two sides of a heist and two sets of "criminals" - an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Deptartment and the state's most successful bank robbery crew. Gerard Butler stars as the guy stuck in the middle, with 50 Cent, Pablo Schreiber, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Sonya Balmores, Maurice Compte, Evan Jones, Brian Van Holt, Jordan Bridges, and Eric Braeden. This looks as bad as it did in the first trailer, and I'm already ready to forget about it and move on. Another bland January action movie release that will be forgotten quickly.

Another Fun US Trailer for Feel-Good Holiday Favorite 'Paddington 2'

Paddington 2 Trailer

"Afternoon, chaps…" Warner Bros has recently debuted a final, second US trailer for the delightful holiday favorite Paddington 2. Yes, we know this movie has already opened in Europe in time for the holidays, and moviegoers are loving it, but it doesn't open in the US until January - in just a few weeks. In this fun-for-the-whole-family sequel, Paddington the bear, now happily settled with the Brown family, picks up a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present (a book) for his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, only for the gift to be stolen. The film's very British cast includes Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Peter Capaldi, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Hugh Bonneville, with Ben Whishaw returning as the voice of Paddington, and Imelda Staunton as the voice of Aunt Lucy. You've probably already heard all the buzz about this from across the pond, luckily it'll be in theaters soon for everyone to enjoy. Have fun.

Watch: No Film School's Glorious Best Cinematography of 2017 Recap

Best Cinematography of 2017

With the year coming to an end, it's time to look back at the movies that defined the year in cinema. One of our favorite websites, No Film School, has put together a superb video to highlight & discuss their picks for the Best Cinematography of 2017. Not only is the video mesmerizing to watch with all of this lovely cinematography, but they completely nailed the selection - picking out, really, all the best cinematography, including from excellent documentaries like Chasing Coral (one of my favorites), Casting JonBenét, and Kedi. (The only big film missing, to me, is Call Me By Your Name…) Of course they feature Blade Runner 2049 (go, Roger Deakins, go!) and Dunkirk, along with Mudbound, Wonder Wheel, Good Time, The Florida Project, and Columbus. Yep, all the best films right there. This year end movie recap video is a must watch.

Official Trailer for Underrated Indie 'Freak Show' Starring Alex Lawther

Freak Show Trailer

"What am I going to do with you?" IFC Films has debuted an official US trailer for an underrated indie dramedy titled Freak Show, which played under-the-radar at a few festivals this year after premiering in Berlin. But I'm guessing most people haven't heard of it. Freak Show is about a "fabulous, glitter-bedecked, gender-bending teenager" named Billy Bloom, played by up-and-coming young actor Alex Lawther, and his experiences at a public high school. It tells a very peculiar story of how to be who you are and not let it affect you, even if you're a freak or weirdo or whatever. His mother is played by Bette Midler, and the cast includes Laverne Cox, Ian Nelson, Abigail Breslin, and AnnaSophia Robb. This is actually a very entertaining film that is worth seeking out, no really. I first saw this at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the summer, and wrote a review here. It has a great soundtrack and plenty of smart humor. Check it out below.

How 'The Last Jedi' & 'Blade Runner 2049' Prove a Hero Can Be Anyone

Office K + Rey

If two of the most anticipated movies from this year – Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 – have anything in common, it's that they are both science fiction and fantasy movies rich with new ideas. In addition, they are also both polarizing films, garnering a divisive response from both hardcore Star Wars devotees and mainstream audiences. In this editorial, however, I want to examine another common thread that binds both movies: how they both deconstruct decades of shared franchise history to show how a hero can be anyone. Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049 have something characteristically in common. You might not have noticed this at first, but both films feature heroes, Daisy Ridley's Rey and Ryan Gosling's Officer K, that are more similar than you might think.

Watch: Video Compares 'Dunkirk' Footage with Real Archival Footage

Dunkirk Footage

"Hope is a weapon. Survival is victory." One of the standout movies from 2017 is Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan's intense and riveting WWII thriller about the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 at the beginning of World War II. Nolan put a great amount of effort in recreating the scenes and experiences as accurately as possible, and that can be sensed when watching the movie on a big screen. Editor and cinema lover Titouan Ropert has created a video featuring six minutes of side-by-side examples of photography & archival footage from WWII compared directly to footage from Nolan's Dunkirk. It's actually breathtaking to see how remarkably accurate it is, and makes me appreciate the movie even more. A few comparisons have been made on social media already, but this video shows how incredibly meticulous Nolan was on this movie. It's worth a watch.

Another Look Back with the 'Movie Nerds' 2017 Movie Mashup Video

2017 Movie Mashup Video

The year is almost over, there's only a few more movies to open in these final few weeks, but that means it's time to start looking back and appreciating the year in movies. 2017 gave us some incredible movies, big and small, weird and crazy, entertaining and emotional. This final video recap is made by the "Movie Nerds" YouTube channel, and is called (by them) the "2017 Movie Mashup Supercut". It packs in footage from pretty much all of the big movies this year, including Blade Runner 2049, Detroit, Wonder Woman, Blade of the Immortal, Wind River, Raw, Dunkirk, Get Out, Coco, Wonder, Logan, Free Fire, and many others. These end of the year videos are great to watch now, not only to remind you of all the good times in the cinema, but give you a few hints at some movies you might've missed and still need to catch up with. Enjoy.
