Migrants Short Film

"We are the cleaners. As were our fathers. We purify the world. One day our children will breathe…" Neill Blomkamp's experimental sci-fi filmmaking collective Oats Studios has surprised us all with a brand new short film titled Migrants. After making their own series of short films, Oats sort of moved on because they couldn't secure enough funding and figure out how to move forward independently. But they're back again with what they've self-described as "Oats Studios Presents Short Films From Artists We Love." Migrants is a short film by Paul Chadeisson, a concept artist who has envision a three-minute short with some stunning CGI visuals of spaceships and space stations hovering above a planet awaiting immigrants. As a space nerd, this is my kind of sci-fi: Isaac Asimov references, and a lovely poetic voiceover about colonizing the cosmos.

Firebase Crowdfounding

It's a big day for Oats Studios! Neill Blomkamp's experimental sci-fi filmmaking lab has officially launched a new crowdfunding website option to get enough financing to develop a feature-length version of the short film Firebase (as seen here). The site and funding platform is open today. From Oats: "We want to build a 21st century studio that is funded directly by fans. The more people online that support us the more content we will put out. We want to create an ecosystem where we are directly fueled by the community. Our goal now is the next Firebase film. Help fuel us here. We want to grow and expand, but we need the community’s help." If you've always wanted to support Oats and help them really make more, now is the time to step up.

Zygote Short Film

"It's coming no matter what we do!" Buckle up, you're in for a crazy ride. These films are getting better and better! Oats Studios has unveiled their next new short film, titled Zygote, an intense horror action story starring Dakota Fanning and Jose Pablo Cantillo. This is perhaps the most cinematic film that Oats has released yet. Directed by the main man himself, Neill Blomkamp, this film features one helluva gnarly monster that appears halfway through. I also love the score, by Lorne Balfe, which makes this feel even more intense. At the bottom of the post, I've included a few answers from Blomkamp to follow-up questions after my first interview about Oats. It's so awesome to see them experimenting with projects like this that would never ever see the light of day in Hollywood, but now we get a chance to experience them. Get ready!

Firebase Film

Ready for more? Neill Blomkamp's experimental sci-fi filmmaking collective Oats Studios has premiered their second short film titled Firebase, set during the Vietnam War. This ultra violent action film is kind of a mix between Predator and Apocalypse Now, with some gnarly surprises in store for those brave enough to venture into the jungle. A few weeks ago, we featured the first film Rakka (about lizard-like aliens enslaving humanity). We also posted an extensive interview with Blomkamp discussing his ideas behind Oats Studios and what they're trying to pull off. So far these two shorts have been awesome, playing with crazy original ideas that no studio would probably greenlight. You can watch the entire film below - and damn is it wicked.

Neill Blomkamp

It's time to start experimenting with sci-fi again. South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is launching a new experimental filmmaking collective called Oats Studios. We've been posting previews over the last few months, but now it's time to give fans a small taste of what's to come. Blomkamp has launched the first project, titled Rakka, online in the form of a 20-minute short film that plays more like an extended proof-of-concept pitch reel. You can find it on Steam or watch the full thing below for free. So what exactly is Oats Studios? I talked with Neill on the phone for 30 minutes earlier this week to dive deep into the concept and figure out exactly what it is they're trying to do. Oats is an "incubator of ideas that come from me or come from other people," then they "put out those ideas to the audience, see how the audience feels about them."

Neill Blomkamp's Oats Studios

"Who are you? What are you becoming? These details are slipping away from you, aren't they?" This looks wicked cool! A few weeks back, we wrote a post about sci-fi filmmaker Neill Blomkamp launching a new production studio called Oats Studios. This bootstrapped studio is developing multiple experimental sci-fi projects, including alien invasion and alternate history Vietnam War films, which will be tested to see which might become theatrically-released features. Blomkamp has revealed a brand new trailer that features some awesome footage from a bunch of these projects. There's even weird footage from a cooking show that I'm curious to know more about. The lizard alien film is the one I'm looking forward to the most so far. Jump in.

Demonic Trailer

"She went on a homicidal rampage - this is your chance to ask her, 'why?'" IFC Midnight has unveiled the full official trailer for the horror Demonic, made by sci-fi filmmaker Neill Blomkamp working with some original horror concepts. He made this film quietly last year, taking friends and a small crew up into the Canadian forest during the pandemic summer. The only vague intro available: A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother & daughter are ruthlessly revealed. The movie stars Carly Pope, Terry Chen, Nathalie Boltt, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers. This is a much more coherent trailer than that thrilling first teaser, setting up the stakes involving this eerie simulation world she goes into to visit her mother in a coma. It seems to hearken back to VR horror films like eXistenZ or even The Lawnmower Man. We shouldn't be surprised Blomkamp is mixing intriguing sci-fi ideas into his first horror feature. Now that it's free, it won't stop coming for you.

Demonic Trailer

"Don't be scared." WHOA! This looks insanely frightening! IFC Midnight has revealed the first teaser trailer for a new horror film titled Demonic, made by sci-fi filmmaker Neill Blomkamp branching into horror. He made this film quietly last year, taking friends and a small crew up into the Canadian forest during the pandemic summer. Aside from a few hints here & there, not much is known about it - or what happens in it. The short synopsis only says: A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother & daughter are ruthlessly revealed. The film stars Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers. This first teaser has so many "holy shit!" shots in it, frrom the creepy hand at the door, to the strange people in the woods. And the weird video game world?! What is going on here! This looks like THE horror event of the summer! Seriously. Bring on the demons, Blomkamp.

Blindsight Short Film

"The ship grows its own crew." "If… it's a ship. If… they're crew." Hell yes – some extra dark space sci-fi! Blindsight is an incredible short film made by multiple collaborators. It took four year to complete and it's now ready to watch - thanks to tip from Neill Blomkamp; this does seem like something his Oats Studios would make as a proof of concept. A small team is sent from Earth to investigate evidence of an alien species and discovers they cannot trust their senses to reflect the reality of the world around them. Blindsight is a short "created by a collaborative group of designers and artists, and directed by Danil Krivoruchko. The film is based on the eponymous sci-fi novel by Peter Watts." This has some extraordinary visuals and some big ideas it explores by questioning humanity's place in the universe. A fascinating, must watch sci-fi short.

Demonic Footage

In 2020, Neill Blomkamp began shooting a secret horror film known only as Demonic. Time for a first look sneak peek! Last year it was revealed that filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, who lives up in Vancouver, Canada, decided to go out and shoot a low budget horror film in the woods during the pandemic summer. The title of the film is Demonic, but aside from a few hints here & there, not much is known about it - or what happens in it. The short synopsis: A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother & daughter are ruthlessly revealed. The film stars Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers. We now have two new photos and a fun little "behind-the-scenes 8mm" teaser to start building hype. There isn't much to this teaser, except a shot of Carly Pope floating, and some drones getting ready to film in the woods. Nonetheless, I'm still looking forward to seeing more of this.

Watch: Blomkamp's Live-Action 'Conviction' Trailer for Anthem Game

Conviction Trailer

"I always knew this day would come… A new beginning. And yet - new enemies would be forged. A line would be crossed…" Oats Studios and BioWare have launched an official live-action video game trailer titled Conviction, promoting the upcoming release of Anthem - which arrives on shelves next week. This trailer is made by Neill Blomkamp, and that's the main reason we're featuring it - because it's basically another new Oats Studios live-action short film and he's still coming up with badass sci-fi concepts. Conviction is a survival story set in the world of Anthem, decades before the events of the game. Most of the exosuits look CGI, but there's still tons of live-action footage in this and it's always cool to see. There's references to Mad Max: Fury Road, and Destiny, and tons of other great sci-fi. I'm a big fan of these live-action trailers. Enjoy.

Oats Studios

What is Neill Blomkamp up to now? Ever since the sad news broke that his Alien reboot with Sigourney Weaver was being canned thanks to Ridley Scott taking over the franchise again, we've been curious about where Blomkamp would head next. Is he working on any movies? What is he developing next? We don't have any definitive answers yet, but we do have some exciting teases for potential science fiction projects in the works. Blomkamp has been tweeting since April about a partnership he has with Steam (the video game platform/distribution service). Apparently he has launched a new development studio called Oats Studio, where they're creating all kinds of crazy cool sci-fi projects. And what they want to do is release teases for them as short films on Steam in order to test and see which ones might become feature-length films. I'm in.
