DreamWorks Animation Snags Rights to 'Casper', 'Voltron' and More

July 23, 2012

DreamWorks Animation / Voltron and Casper

Here's some news that might make family-friendly movie fans happy. DreamWorks Animation announced in a press release that they have acquired Classic Media, a company that owns the film rights to iconic characters like Casper the Friendly Ghost, Where's Waldo?, Lassie, George of the Jungle, and The Lone Ranger. They'll obviously have to contend with Disney on that last property, since a live-action Lone Ranger is already on the way, but this is a cool opportunity to bring some of these classic characters back to the big screen and introduce them to a new generation that might not know them at all.

A 'Voltron' Movie Might Be Coming by 2014, Bidding War Underway

March 8, 2011

Voltron

Is it finally time for the evil King Zarkon, from planet Doom, to show his face? Vulture is reporting that after years of development mayhem, apparently there is a bidding war currently going on for feature film rights to the classic 80's animated series Voltron. Yea, we've talked about this before and you may remember those totally badass concept art images that hit the web last year (seen above - click here for more). Well, Vulture says that Relativity Media is currently the frontrunner looking to pick up the rights. This was in originally development at Atlas Entertainment, but it looks like World Events Productions is selling the rights again.

First Look: Epic Concept Art for a Live-Action 'Voltron' Movie!

September 16, 2010

Voltron Movie

The last we heard of a Voltron movie was over a year ago, in July of '09, when it was revealed that Charles Roven's Atlas Entertainment had acquired the rights and was developing a live-action take on the animated TV series. We haven't heard a single word about it since, but out of nowhere JoBlo landed some very badass concept art that is supposedly part of Atlas' pitch for the project which they are taking around Hollywood to sell. We don't know who's responsible for this gorgeous artwork, but word is Atlas got screenwriters Thomas Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara, Conan, Doctor Strange) to pen the script. You've got to see this!

Voltron Movie in Development Again with Dark Knight Producer

July 19, 2009

Voltron

If you're a big fan of Voltron, then we've got some good news. THR's Risky Biz Blog announces that the live-action rights to a Voltron movie have switched owners. Charles Roven (The Dark Knight), Richard Suckle (The International) and Steve Alexander are the new producers on this. They replace Mark Gordon who had brought on Justin Marks, the screenwriter responsible for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Marks had written a Voltron script that focused on an alien invasion in an apocalyptic North America. The new owners will restart development on this from scratch and I believe will throw out Marks' screenplay.

Indie Filmmaker Max Makowski Directing Voltron?!

August 29, 2008

Voltron

Just weeks after we announced that the Voltron movie was dumped by Fox, our friends at Latino Review have discovered who will be directing the latest iteration. Max Makowski, who directed a 2005 Sundance film called One Last Dance and is currently working on the Kung Fu redux for Warner Brothers, will be helming Voltron. An odd choice? Maybe so, but Latino Review says that Max "is supposed to have a great visual style that's very specific and all his own," which should be a good thing. Other than that, not much is known about him, besides that he's got some potential and had a Sundance movie that caused some buzz.

Voltron Movie Finally Coming Together With a Smaller Budget

August 18, 2008

Voltron

Remember when everyone thought Cloverfield was a Voltron movie? Well back in August last year, Fox announced that they were moving forward with their own Voltron: Defender of the Universe film, putting that Cloverfield rumor to rest. One year and we've finally got an update from Fox - they're dumping the project but Relativity Media has come to the rescue. That production company is still looking to develop the film, but with a more constrained budget that implements cost-effective technology like Zack Snyder used in 300. Apparently part of the problem was that it was troublesome for Fox to originally get the rights, but now it seems like it's ready to go with Justin Marks' screenplay still intact as well.

Voltron Movie Moving Forward at Fox

August 10, 2007

It's confirmed: J.J. Abrams Cloverfield / 1-18-08 project is NOT Voltron! It was announced today that 20th Century Fox-based production company New Regency has partnered with the Mark Gordon Company to adapt Voltron: Defender of the Universe into a possible franchise. Currently writer Justin Marks, who is also writing the He-Man movie, is penning the first script.

Full Trailer for Netflix's 'The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf' Anime

August 10, 2021

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Trailer

"Hunting monsters for coin wasn't enough?!" Netflix has unveiled the full official trailer for a film called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, a spin-off anime feature complimenting their live-action fantasy series "The Witcher". Arriving on Netflix later this month for those interested. The world of The Witcher expands in this anime origin story: Before Geralt (played by Henry Cavill on the show), there was Vesemir -- a cocky young witcher who delights in slaying monsters for coin. When a dangerous new power rises on the Continent, Vesemir learns some witchering jobs are about more than just money… The voice cast includes Theo James as Vesemir, along with Graham McTavish, Mary McDonnell, and Lara Pulver. This anime film was made by Studio Mir in Korea, also known for " The Legend of Korra" and "The Boondocks" and "Voltron: Legendary Defender", among many other shows. So this looks pretty dang good - even if you don't watch "The Witcher" series or know anything about it, this film might still be a worth a watch anyway.

Joker's Back in 'Batman: The Long Halloween' Parts 1 and 2 Trailers

Batman: The Long Halloween Trailer

"Everyone's invited to this party!" Warner Bros has unveiled an official trailer for both parts of their new animated adaptation of the iconic comic book Batman: The Long Halloween. These animated direct-to-VOD / DVD movies are the latest animated WB DC offerings, based on the iconic mid-1990s DC story from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Batman investigates a murder spree in Gotham that takes place on holidays. Few cases have ever tested the wits of the World's Greatest Detective like the mystery behind the Holiday Killer… The Dark Knight must fight a unified front of classic DC Super-Villains, diffuse an escalating mob war and solve the mystery of the Holiday Killer in The Long Halloween - Part Two. Featuring the voices of Jensen Ackles as Batman, and Troy Baker as Joker, with Laila Berzins, Billy Burke, Zach Callison, David Dastmalchian, Alyssa Diaz, John DiMaggio, Robin Atkin Downes, and Josh Duhamel. This looks quite similar to other Batman movies we've seen, but I'm still excited to see this story turned into animation.

A New Era of Sci-Fi is Upon Us - Looking Ahead to Worlds That Await

March 27, 2013

Oblivion Science Fiction

"Here is your mission: pass your knowledge on to the next, as it was passed on to you." A new era of sci-fi is upon us. In just a few years we'll be watching another trilogy of Star Wars movies, picking up where the original trilogy left off 30 years ago. Star Trek has already been revived on the big screen, coincidentally by the same director set to bring us the next Star Wars - J.J. Abrams. Ever since James Cameron's Avatar raised the bar with another box office record in late 2009-early 2010, science fiction movies have been back with a vengeance. Aside from Star Wars and Star Trek returning, things are getting more exciting every day, with filmmakers like Chris Nolan, Alfonso CuarĂ³n, Ridley Scott and Edgar Wright venturing into sci-fi.

'Walking Dead' Producer Gets 'Gaiking' for More Robots vs. Monsters

December 19, 2012

Gaiking

If the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim didn't look like your kind of summer blockbuster jam featuring giant monsters versus giant robots, then we have some good news. A press release from Valhalla Entertainment and Gale Anne Hurd, the producer of Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon and "The Walking Dead" has pegged Hurd to produce a live-action feature film adaptation of Toei Animation's anime property Gaiking, one of the super robots from Shogun Warriors. We heard about this project back in March of 2010, but now it seems to be gaining traction, and we even have some cool visual effects test footage. Look!

'Chronicle' Director to Adapt 'Shadow of the Colossus' Video Game

May 23, 2012

Shadow of the Colossus

We already know that Chronicle director Josh Trank is unlikely to come back to direct the gestating sequel to the surprise found footage super powered film, but that doesn't mean he's not busy. In addition to developing a Fantastic Four reboot, a Spider-Man spin-off following Venom, and an adaptation of Red Star, it looks like Trank is heading into the video game world as well. Deadline has word that Trank has signed on to direct an adaptation of the video game Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures. And for those who have played the game, this is an epic story that could very well make one hell of a fantasy action movie.
