"Three things I got good at to survive: running, fighting, and stealing." HBO Max has unveiled a full trailer for their new adaptation of the beloved book titled The Time Traveler's Wife. This is another new take on the book, as they already made the The Time Traveler's Wife movie, with Eric Bana & Rachel McAdams, which first opened in 2009. This new series stars Rose Leslie & Theo James as the couple dealing with the challenges of random time travel. For those unfamilair with this, it's not so much of a story about time travel as it is a romance about the difficulties of finding and staying in love. "Every moment matters," the tagline states. The cast also includes Jason David, Kate Siegel, Jaime Ray Newman, Josh Stamberg, Taylor Richardson, Spencer House, & Michael Park. Wow this looks damn good, I quite like the way into gets into all these existential questions between the two of them. "Why is love intensified by absence?"
"Extreming soon." Who's ready for more?!?! I loveeeee this animated series from Netflix - more more more. Keep these coming for years, please! Netflix has revealed a fun teaser for their next installment of Love, Death + Robots. This Volume 3 teaser doesn't contain any finished footage yet from the next 8 shorts - it's only an amusing "look back" at the first two installments, with some clever Netflix self-mockery in the opening intro. Just because they're the same "studio" that gave us dainty series like "Bridgerton" doesn't mean they can't also bring epic, gnarly, disgusting, crazy concepts to the screen, too! Hell yes! This third installment was announced at the same time as Volume 2 last year, and also features eight new short films to enjoy - starting in May. "From uncovering an ancient evil to a comedic apocalypse, telling startling short stories of fantasy, horror & science-fiction." That's all we know so far about these next eight - along with a set of images below. I'm already so excited to watch! They always explore the most creative, intriguing ideas.
"Nothing like it has ever been on Endor before. It came for the thrill of the hunt." Witness the great battle between two ultimate space creatures - the great Predator and the adorable Ewoks. This fun, fan made short film is 90 seconds of geeky, movie bliss. Filmmaker-comedian Matt Highton put together this amazing little video called Ewoks VS. Predator, and it is exactly as described in that title. He mashes up footage from both movies in a perfect way to actually give give us an entertaining almost-two-minutes of sci-fi goodness. As someone on Twitter said, "Ewoks finally have a worthy adversary…" So true. Now I want to see more of this! If Matt can make something this amusing and hilarious out of just a few bits of footage, I wonder how many other awesome video mashups there could be having the Ewoks battle anyone from any other galaxy.
We still don't know what this is really about, right? We still don't know what the big, scary "thing" is that comes to town? Only time will tell. Universal has debuted a basketball TV spot for Jordan Peele's new film Nope, which seems to be a sci-fi thriller involving an extraterrestrial appearance in a small town. The spot features acclaimed NBA played Steph Curry playing at a basketball court in this town, when the lights go out and he goes outside and looks up and exclaims "nope!" Along with the first trailer back in February, this footage is all so mysterious and interesting. Nope's main cast features Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Michael Wincott, Donna Mills, and Terry Notary. We still have no idea if this is actually about aliens (or not?), but that's definitely what all these trailers are hinting at. Enjoy.
"The fabric of the universe hangs by a very thin thread." Wild Eye Releasing has unveiled the official US trailer for a wacky, homemade sci-fi comedy from New Zealand called The Peacemakers. This is actually made by a Russian filmmaker named Svyatoslav Nikitin, who doesn't have any other credits of note before. In the film, two mysterious figures arrive on earth to hunt down a renegade and determine the fate of the planet. The tagline: "Saving the galaxy, one sh**hole at a time." There's some clever style with their outfits and a few impressive low budget VFX shots, but overall this seems a bit lackluster. Starring Noah Paul, Rick Didham, Kylah Carree, and Thomas MacKinnon. I'll admit that everything about this makes me curious (especially as a sci-fi geek) but this is such a bad trailer it almost makes me not interested. Oh well.
"In this box, I hold the next step on the great timeline. But before I show you what's inside… I want to tell you my story." This is the best trailer yet! Looking damn good. Showtime has revealed a second full-length official trailer for their sci-fi series The Man Who Fell To Earth. A modern update on the iconic 1976 sci-fi film that starred David Bowie, also titled The Man Who Fell To Earth. They're re-adapting the novel that the film was based on, written by Walter Tevis and first published in 1963. "An alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future." The highly anticipated upcoming original sci-fi drama series The Man Who Fell To Earth – starring Oscar & Emmy nominee and BAFTA Award winner Chiwetel Ejiofor – debuts on Showtime this April. Naomie Harris will also star as Justin Falls, a brilliant scientist and engineer who must conquer her own demons in the race to save two worlds. The cast also includes Jimmi Simpson, Rob Delaney, and Sonya Cassidy. Yeah this continues to look superb! Finally a glimpse at the tech and big implications of this story. Check it out below.
"Something's happening here, something bigger than you or me. The world's been waiting for something like this…" Amazon has revealed the full-length official trailer for a mysterious new sci-fi thriller series titled Outer Range, premiering on Prime Video for streaming later in April. The series follows a rancher fighting for his land and family who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming's wilderness. All kinds of different people are interested - government, conspiracy theorists, and more. "A thrilling fable with hints of wry humor & supernatural mystery, Outer Range examines how we grapple with the unknown." It all comes to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts' west pasture. Josh Brolin stars as Royal, with a major ensemble cast including Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Tom Pelphrey, Imogen Poots, Lewis Pullman, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Matthew Maher, and Will Patton. I love the look of this! The way it starts out with a family man just defending his land, but it turns into something much more fascinating and intriguing and chilling. Definitely a must watch! Check out the full trailer below.
"It's not safe here. They'll find us." Sony Pictures has unveiled a new trailer for The Calm Beyond, a Hong Kong sci-fi thriller survival movie that is now out to watch in the US. This premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2020, and has quietly dropped in the US already, even though this is the first time we're posting this trailer. A young woman lives on, hidden in plain sight in a ruined Hong Kong building after a tsunami destroyed the city. A castaway on a concrete island. Her concealed existence is changed forever when a small child literally floats into her life. In an interview: "The idea for a film, The Calm Beyond, came to [director Joshua Wong] during an MRI scan. It's about surviving a storm and 'how you live after.'" Unfortunately the director passed away after finishing and premiering this in 2020. The film stars Kara Wang as Asha, with Sarinna Boggs and Terence Yin. This is a fairly short trailer, only running about 60 seconds, with one epic shot of flooded Hong Kong at the end. The rest of it almost feels like a zombie film, for better or worse.
"You're pretending to be me while I'm still alive?" RLJE Films has revealed the first official trailer for the indie sci-fi film Dual, the latest from American filmmaker Riley Stearns (of Faults, The Art of Self-Defense previously). This initially premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year playing in the main competition, but got pretty bad reviews from most critics who watched it. It's a very low key sci-fi in that has a "futuristic" concept involving cloning, but there's not much beyond that that is sci-fi about it. A woman opts for a cloning procedure after she receives a terminal diagnosis but when she recovers her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail, leading to a court-mandated duel to the death with her other self. Let them fight! Karen Gillan stars opposite Karen Gillan, along with Aaron Paul, Beulah Koale, Maija Paunio, and Theo James. I saw this at Sundance and was hoping to love it, but I did not care for it at all. Not great. There seem to be a range different opinions on it, so have at it and form your own opinion as well.
"I am convinced we are inside a living machine." Paramount Pictures has revealed a new trailer for the 4K streaming re-release of the classic sci-fi Star Trek: The Motion Picture. This new version, dubbed "The Director's Edition", was originally finished and updated by filmmaker Robert Wise in 2001 before he passed away in 2005. He revisited the film to refine the edit and enhance the visual effects, updating them for a more modern look. It was released then only on DVD, but never in full HD until now. Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture became the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Score. Featuring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan. This really does look better than ever before! This trailer makes me want to revisit this as soon as it's out on Paramount+ for streaming this spring - a classic sci-fi movie that still rocks.
"It's not a super power… it's what's wrong with me." HBO Max has revealed the first look teaser trailer for their new adaptation of this beloved book - The Time Traveler's Wife. In a rush to fill up their servers with more and more content, they're adapting any and everything they can get their hands on. Much like the The Man Who Fell To Earth, this is another adaptation of a sci-fi book following a movie in the past. The Time Traveler's Wife movie, with Eric Bana & Rachel McAdams, originally opened in 2009. This new series stars Rose Leslie & Theo James as the couple dealing with the challenges of random time travel. It's not so much of a story about time travel as it is a romance about the difficulties of finding and staying in love. This looks quite lovely so far, Rose Leslie brings a genuine warmth to this first look. I'm curious to see more.
"Remember the Bermuda Triangle?" Disney has revealed a trailer for a new sci-fi series from France called Parallels, debuting for streaming in just a few weeks. This is actually set around the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, located right on the French-Swiss border. The lives of the four friends Bilal, Romane, Samuel and Victor are completely turned upside down when a mysterious event ensures tears them from their world and each of them finds themselves in a different parallel world. They do everything possible to understand what exactly happened and look for a way to return to their original timelines before alerting their futures. Starring Thomas Chomel, Omar Mebrouk, Jules Houplain, Jade Pedri, Naidra Ayadi, Guillaume Labbé, Gil Alma, Elise Diamant, Dimitri Storoge, Agnès Miguras, Maxime Bergeron, Victoria Eber, and Timoté Rigault. This trailer doesn't look as good as it should. It seems lke a wannabe Disney+ version of "Dark" but without the subtleties that make that show fantastic. Plus the English dub is just bad.
