"We will find the truth; we will find the culprits." Topic has revealed an official US trailer for a streaming series from Finland titled Helsinki Syndrome, a riff on the classic "Stockholm Syndrome" term. The story involves a crime from the past being connected to a current hostage situation in Finland. Entrepreneur Elias Karo takes four journalists hostage in order to reveal that 30 years ago, a bank manager and a district court judge took his family's possessions with the government's blessing and caused a still ongoing family tragedy. Elias, a working class family man is deeply haunted by the economic strife his family endured in the 90s. To settle a decades-long vendetta, he holds 4 journalists hostage to expose bank and government corruption while concealing an ulterior motive. The series stars Kseniya Peter Franzén, Oona Airola, and Taneli Mäkelä. This definitely looks like a made-for-TV series, but it has an intriguing premise and I'm curious to see how ends with this guy and his demands. If you're interested in corruption, this looks like a must watch.
"If you get on an animal that can kill you without even trying… it's like trying to control an explosion." Amazon's Prime Video has revealed a first look teaser for its new bullriding sports documentary series titled The Ride, following in the footsteps of so many other doc series recently about golfing, F1 racing, tennis, and more. The Ride follows an ensemble cast of bull riders and coaches throughout the PBR Team Series, as they navigate the league's inaugural 2022 season, budding rivalries, exhilarating highs, and the challenging lows of PBR’s newest team-based competition. The PBR (Professional Bull Riders) organization launched a brand new format last year, and this doc is made up of all the footage they shot on that first year. I'm sure many didn't even realize bull riding was still an ongoing professional sport, but it absolutely is. This is also covered in Chloe Zhao's excellent film called The Rider. It's only a 20 second teaser but yeah this looks wild.
"You write songs about who you wish you were, not who you are." Prime Video has revealed a new official trailer for a streaming series coming this March titled Daisy Jones & The Six, about a (fictional) rock band from the 1970s. It's made by director James Ponsoldt and the writers behind 500 Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now. The series follows the rise of rock band Daisy Jones and The Six through the '70s LA music scene on their quest for worldwide icon status. While the story is presented in a documentary style, including background interviews with the band, this is an entirely fictional story that captures the essence of creativity in the erratic, wild world of the 1970s. "It's time to hear the real story." Daisy Jones & The Six stars Riley Keough as the titular Daisy, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Nabiyah Be, Will Harrison, Josh Whitehouse, Sebastian Chacon, and Tom Wright. This looks damn good! The faux documentary style makes it even more intriguing, they really went all out telling this band's story.
"I hope that you still want to see me dance, Yeon-jin." Revenge is always intense!! Netflix has revealed a new official trailer for Part 2 of their streaming series The Glory from Korea. Part 1 of this series is already streaming, it launched in late December a few weeks ago. This almost sounds like one of Park Chan-wook's revenge movies. A young woman, bullied to the point of deciding to drop out of school, plans the best way to get revenge. After becoming a primary school teacher, she takes in the son of the man who tormented her the most to enact her vengeance. "From now on, every single day will be a nightmare. They’ll be provocative and terrifying. You can't stop me or make me disappear." Starring Song Hye-kyo, Lee Do-hyun, Lim Ji-yeon, Yeom Hye-ran, Park Sung-hoon, and Jung Sung-il. Seems like it's almost a cathartic revenge story, about a woman getting back at everyone in a very meticulous, carefully planned way. "As Dong-eun's plan begins to unfold, the perpetrators have no idea what’s coming to them." It looks like an intense thriller.
"He works for the Russians. He has lied to you, and he has used you." MGM+ has revealed a quick first look teaser trailer for their upcoming British spy series titled A Spy Among Friends, arriving for streaming in March in a few more months. The service formerly known as Epix has re-branded as MGM+, and they're getting preparing a big line-up this spring. "The epic true story of Kim Philby, the Cold War's most infamous spy, from the 'master storyteller' and author of Prisoners of the Castle." Yes it's an adaptation of the book of the same name. The British mini-series that stars Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby, two real-life 1960s British spies who, despite their opposing allegiances, developed a life-long friendship. This reminds me a bit of the other British spy film The Courier (aka Ironbark) from a few years ago. The series also stars Anna Maxwell Martin, Adrian Edmondson, Stephen Kunken, Nicholas Rowe, and Anastasia Hille. I'm looking forward to seeing more footage from this before it's out to watch.
"Congratulations on your new home in the stars!" Apple has released an official trailer for a sci-fi comedy series titled Hello Tomorrow!, arriving for streaming February on their Apple TV+ platform. This has a peculiar concept that involves classic sci-fi concepts like floating cars, rocket packs, and robo helpers even though it's all set in the past. "What if the life you’ve always dreamed of was just one great deal away?" In a retro-futuristic world, charismatic salesman Jack Billings leads a team of fellow sales associates determined to revitalize their customers' lives by hawking timeshares on the moon. Billy Crudup stars as Jack Billings, along with Haneefah Wood, Alison Pill, Nicholas Podany, Matthew Maher, Dewshane Williams, and Hank Azaria. It's pretty obvious from this trailer what's going on, it looks like one big setup to just get rid of people by firing them into space. I wonder if they figure it all out, then what? Hmmm this looks good.
"This machine is reminding people our lives have more than one possible path." Apple TV+ has revealed a first look teaser trailer for one of their upcoming series titled The Big Door Prize, adapted from novel of the same name written by M.O. Walsh. This is a clever, alluring teaser that uses the cool blue glow of this machine to grab your attention, leaving the rest up to your imagination. The series follows the residents of a small town called Deerfield, who one day discover a magical, destiny-predicting machine in their grocery store - "promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential." It's about a mysterious machine that upends a small Louisiana town, asking us all to wonder if who we truly are is who we truly could be. Starring Chris O'Dowd as Dusty, with Gabrielle Dennis, Ally Maki, Josh Segarra, Damon Gupton, Crystal Fox, Sammy Fourlas, and Djouliet Amara. I haven't read the book before - but yeah I'm sold, this definitely got my attention. I want to know what the Morpho machine tells them! And how they respond! Anyone else?
"Nobody gets through this life unscathed." Apple has revealed the full official trailer for the comedy series Shrinking, landing on Apple TV+ soon. A grieving therapist starts to tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge changes to people's lives - including his own. Jason Segel stars with Harrison Ford. Ford is Dr. Paul Rhoades, "a down-to earth, sharp as a tack 'blue collar shrink,' blunt but with an ever present twinkle. Paul is a pioneer in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy who has built a successful practice over the years that he shares with his two young proteges, Jimmy and Gaby. Fiercely independent, Paul has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's, which forces him out of his comfort zone." It's co-written by Emmy Award winning "Ted Lasso" co-creator Bill Lawrence, Emmy Award-winning "Ted Lasso" star, writer and co-executive producer Brett Goldstein and Jason Segel. Shrinking's primary cast also includes Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, and Lukita Maxwell. This looks like a crazy fun mix of being depressing and hilarious. Segel and Ford! What a combo.
"Welcome to Paris… Where you've stepped into the spotlight as the star of you're own romantic comedy." Roku has revealed an amusing official trailer for a "unscripted" romantic comedy concept called Meet Me in Paris. Technically it's a film, so we're posting it anyway, though this is clearly just some cheesy reality TV show that they're trying to promote as a big Valentine's Day movie instead. "Love like in the movies." Three real women follow a script and write their own endings in Meet Me in Paris, a first-of-its-kind reality rom-com and Roku Original Film, made by Hello Sunshine and Cinestar. The film stars Danielle Matteo, Mimi Shou, and Jasmine Fleet as they make their way around Paris, going on dates, meeting men, and having fun. As always, these reality shows look entirely scripted, or at least setup in terms of activities and the most cliche Parisian moments to capture on camera with them. Definitely not for me, won't be watching.
"Now you may think you know the story, but there's one more layer of this bloomin' onion left to peel back." Peacock has revealed another trailer for their mystery-of-the-week series Poker Face, streaming later this month. This is labeled as a "TCA Exclusive Look" that adds even more footage on top of the other full-length trailer from last month. Glass Onion director Rian Johnson made this with co-writer Charlie Peppers and Natasha Lyonne after filming his last movie. The series follows Lyonne's Charlie, who has an "extraordinary ability" to determine when someone is lying - a "human lie detector," as she is known. She hits the road driving in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. The ensemble cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Stephanie Hsu, David Castañeda, Ron Perlman, Benjamin Bratt, Adrien Brody, Danielle Macdonald, Dascha Polanco, Lil Rel Howery, Ellen Barkin, Chloë Sevigny, the Tim Blake Nelson, Hong Chau, Cherry Jones, Judith Light, Tim Meadows, and Jameela Jamil. This is lookin' like it will be some delectable & spicy murder-solving fun.
"We're trying to keep you alive. You're not immune from being ripped apart." HBO premiered their brand new series post-apocalyptic survival series The Last of Us this past weekend. The very first episode is now available to watch via streaming, with more episodes arriving every week. So far so good? How many of you have already started watching? The series will continue and HBO has revealed another preview hinting at "the weeks ahead" and showing more footage of what's to come. Joel and Ellie, a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across post-pandemic America. Based on the popular video game series, this stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Elli, with Gabriel Luna, Nick Offerman, Merle Dandridge, Murray Bartlett, Jeffrey Pierce, Melanie Lynskey, and Anna Torv. The original game composer Gustavo Santaolalla is scoring, and Chernobyl's Craig Mazin directed the pilot. This looks like it's getting scarier! Ready for more?
"All it takes is a few big cases" Netflix has revealed the full-length official trailer for Lockwood & Co., a new supernatural series made by the acclaimed UK filmmaker Joe Cornish (director of Attack the Block and The Kid Who Would Be King). This is based on a book series that involves a ghost-hunters group called Lockwood & Co. - a small agency in London that runs independent of any adult supervision. A tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history. Starring Ruby Stokes as Lucy Carlyle, Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood, Ali Hadji-Heshmati as George Karim, plus Ivanno Jeremiah, Jack Bandeira, Morven Christie, Rhianna Dorris, and Paddy Holland. Yeah this concept still looks like Ghostbusters + Harry Potter, but with Joe Cornish behind the lens it actually looks awesome anyway! Some great visuals and energetic spunk. I'm curious! Arriving for streaming later in January. Check it out below.
