Before you brush your teeth, before you get out of bed, before you walk out the door, before you drink your coffee this morning… You need to see this teaser trailer.

Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth is director Guillermo del Toro's next masterpiece about a young girl who moves to post-war Spain in 1944. Fascist repression is at its height as the young girl live out her own epic and imaginative gothic fairy tale complete with monsters. This film has an incredibly visual style and unique look due to the brilliance of Guillermo del Toro.

In addition to simply the fantastic look of it, this film has already been receiving incredible responses. Not only from Cannes, where an early cut was screened, but recently as well. I've heard personally from LatinoReview.com's Kellvin that this film is one of, if not the, best film of this year. Guillermo delivered an incredible panel at Comic-Con (that we covered live) that excited nearly everyone in attendance. In addition there's been plenty of talk around the internet about just how great it is. The point is that this new teaser trailer released today truly puts the movie into the epic scope and scale of what it will be.

Kiki's Delivery Service Live-Action

Meet Kiki. So this technically isn't a remake, rather a re-adaptation of the children's novel that this story is originally from. However, most of us are familiar with Kiki's Delivery Service as one of the many great Studio Ghibli animated movies. This one was originally released in 1989, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and is a charming, cute film about a young witch and her cat. There's now a live-action version of Kiki's Delivery Service, starring Fuka Koshiba as Kiki (above) directed by The Grudge creator Takashi Shimizu, and the first Japanese trailer has just arrived. It's pretty much exactly what you're expecting - but still looks fun.

Pinocchio Trailer

"You never know how long you have with someone… until they're gone." Netflix has revealed a third official trailer for Pinocchio, a stunning new stop-motion animated film from Guillermo del Toro. This looks absolutely wonderful!! All the reviews so far are already saying it's one of the best films of the year, not even just as an animated film, but out of any new film this year. GdT reinvents Carlo Collodi's classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This stop-motion musical follows the mischievous & disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world. Directed by del Toro & Mark Gustafson, the film features an all-star voice cast with Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, plus Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Tilda Swinton, and Christoph Waltz. The film is already showing in limited US theaters now if anyone wants to watch it on the big screen. It will be out on Netflix for streaming at the start of December a month from now.

Behind the Craft Featurette

"I really wanted this movie to land in a way that had the expressiveness and material nature of a hand-made piece of animation." As part of their Tudum special event, Netflix revealed a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. We already posted the first trailer for this stunning stop-motion animated film during the summer, with the release still set for December on Netflix. GdT reinvents Carlo Collodi's classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This musical story follows the mischievous & disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world. Directed by del Toro & Mark Gustafson, the film features an all-star voice cast lead by Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, and Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. This featurette shows us some of the process of animating and creating the characters, including various size models that Guillermo seems giddy to show off. I'm totally with him on how stop-motion has this magical feel to it that no other VFX can replicate! Something very special about it.

Pinocchio Trailer

"I feel as though you've been here before… the wooden boy with the borrowed soul." Ah wow! Netflix has revealed the first full-length official trailer for Pinocchio, a stunning new stop-motion animated film from Guillermo del Toro. This looks magnificent! Way better than Disney's new live-action movie with Tom Hanks. The film is set to arrive on Netflix in December at the end of this year with a theatrical release in November. Along with Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton. Of course it's no surprise that Guillermo's version of Pinocchio looks like the best cinematic telling of this story yet. Enjoy.

The Art of Visual Storytelling

"Films don't need to have grandiose visual production to have pertinent and strong imagery." While film is a visual medium, there's more to cinema than just pointing a camera at actors. Here's another excellent video essay to enjoy - brought to us by UK-based distributor Studiocanal. The Art of Visual Storytelling is a video essay created by "The Cinema Cartography", a collective creating videos about film and exploring various themes (we also posted their The Greatest Films You Don't Know a few months ago). This one looks at how films use visual storytelling and the different kinds of visual techniques that filmmakers are fond of utilizing. They discuss classics like Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, Akira Kurosawa's Ran, David Lynch's The Elephant Man, Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, plus Michael Powell's films and Jean Cocteau's films. As always, this just make me want to watch more films - especially all of these classics.

Pinocchio Teaser

"It's a story you may think you know, but uh, you don't. Not really." Netflix has revealed a first look teaser for Pinocchio, the new film from Guillermo del Toro following Nightmare Alley's released last month. This is set to arrive on Netflix in December later this year, and I expect it to show up at film festivals before then. Del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi's classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This stop-motion musical follows the mischievous & disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world. Nightmare Alley Trailer

"Can you read minds?" "Yes I can, under the right circumstances…" Searchlight Pictures has revealed the full official trailer for the new Guillermo del Toro film titled Nightmare Alley, an adaptation of the 1946 novel of the same name. We featured the first teaser a few months ago. The book was also adapted into a famous 1947 film also titled Nightmare Alley, but Guillermo says he's going to back to the book for a fresh take on this story. An ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist even more dangerous than he is. The exquisite cast includes Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, and David Strathairn. This is a must see just for that cast alone! My goodness. What a line-up. This trailer is filled with mystery & intrigue, more than enough to sell me. Who's ready for del Toro's latest?

This was filmed last year at the beginning of 2020, then later in 2020 after a pandemic pause. Guillermo's finally back!! Ohhhh this looks SO GOOD! Sicilian Ghost Story Trailer

"For me if you dream something, it means it might exist…" Strand Releasing has debuted the full US trailer for an Italian indie horror film titled Sicilian Ghost Story, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in Critics' Week last year, and played at a number of other festivals last year. Set in a little Sicilian village at the edge of a forest, the film is about a girl named Luna who goes into the forest to search for a boy she's in love with from school, Giuseppe, who disappeared. What she finds is unlike anything she's seen before. The film stars Julia Jedlikowska as Luna, and Gaetano Fernandez as Giuseppe, with Corinne Musallari, Andrea Falzone, Federico Finocchiaro, Lorenzo Curcio, Vincenzo Amato, plus Filippo Luna. This does remind me a bit of del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, but with an Italian touch. Looks creepy but good.

Retro The Shape of Water Trailer

"Not since the beginning of time has the world known terror like this!" Video editor/filmmaker Erick Solis has created a retro 50s trailer for Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, which will likely pick up a few Academy Awards this weekend. The film is inspired by many great classic films, specifically Creature from the Black Lagoon (released in 1954) and other Universal Monsters movies. This trailer is a throwback to those films and it's pretty much a perfect re-edit for this film, which already feels vintage anyway. Sally Hawkins stars in The Shape of Water, and the film's excellent ensemble cast includes Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones , and David Hewlett. This is a fun watch as we head into Oscars weekend, since The Shape of Water has the most nominations of any film.
