A Doomed COVID-19 Cruise - First Trailer for 'The Last Cruise' Doc
"If we're still reporting this many cases, how are we ever gunna get off the ship?" HBO has revealed the official trailer for the documentary short The Last Cruise, which will be available to watch on HBO later this month. The Last Cruise is a 40 minute doc that's premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this week in the Documentary Shorts Competition section. A terrifying origin story of the pandemic, the film chronicles the first & largest outbreak of the novel coronavirus outside China: the Diamond Princess cruise liner. Through never-before-seen footage from passengers and crew, we watch class divisions erupt as humanity misses its chance to contain COVID-19. It looks like a harrowing film about the coronavirus and how authorities tried to contain it. Probably best as a 40-min short because I don't think anyone can watch a full 90 mins of this.

Deiondre Teagle in Official Trailer for 70s Throwback 'Death Ranch'
"Nobody been on this damn ranch since granddaddy died." "Nobody but us." 4Digital Media has released a new official trailer for a '70s throwback indie feature titled Death Ranch, from filmmaker Charlie Steeds. This looks like some Blaxploitation madness that should be a part of Grindhouse more than a real film. Deiondre Teagle & Faith Monique & Travis Cutner star as three African American siblings on the run from police that take refuge at a Tennessee Ranch, unaware it's on the hunting grounds of a Ku Klux Klan cult. Trapped and tortured, they fight to escape and take down the bloodthirsty Klan to get revenge on them. The cast includes Scot Scurlock & Brad Belemjian. I wish this looked better than it does in this trailer.

Fun 'Modern Trailers' for Classic Movies Like 'Alien' & 'Casablanca'
"You know what I'm thinking? I want to be in business with you." As part of an online marketing campaign, HBO Max has been releasing a series of "modern trailers" for classic movies (from the Warner Bros archive and a few other studios). The "modern trailer" YouTube trend has been around for years already, along with its opposite, the modern trailers remade like trailers from previous decades. But they're always still fun to watch, especially when they're precisely edited and actually have the exact vibe of the trailers from the era they're mimicking. HBO Max has debuted at least 11 "modern trailers" for movies like Alien, Gremlins, Casablanca, Free Willy, Grumpy Old Men, Dog Day Afternoon, and Training Day. If you want to watch any of them, all 11 available (so far) are embedded below for your perusing pleasure. Dive right in.

First Trailer for 'Concrete Cowboy' with Idris Elba & Caleb McLaughlin
"Only way you can realize its true spirit is through love." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Concrete Cowboy, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Inspired by the novel "Ghetto Cowboy" by G. Neri, Concrete Cowboy is directed by first-time feature filmmaker Ricky Staub; and produced by Tucker Tooley, Lee Daniels, Idris Elba, Dan Walser, Jeff Waxman, Jennifer Madeloff. A teen discovers a world of urban horseback riding when he moves in with his estranged father in North Philly. Starring Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin, Jharrel Jerome, Byron Bowers, Lorraine Toussaint, and Clifford "Method Man" Smith. Along with members of the Fletcher Street Stables. It's a "moving father-son drama about a teen caught between a life of crime and his estranged father’s vibrant urban-cowboy subculture." This is a fantastic trailer, with an exceptional performance from McLaughlin as the young Cole.

Special DNA to Control Other's Senses in Sci-Fi 'Sensation' Trailer
"Are you ready for the next part of your training?" GROFIlm has released an official trailer for a peculiar indie sci-fi thriller titled Sensation, the latest from filmmaker Martin Grof. This April protect your DNA. When a lowly postman is inducted into a top-secret superhuman DNA program at a research facility, it's revealed that he'll be able to receive, control and send information based on the senses of others. Described as "David Cronenberg meets Tenet", though this trailer doesn't really have that kind of vibe. Sensation stars Eugene Simon (seen in "Game of Thrones"), Emily Wyatt, Jennifer Martin, Alastair G. Cumming, Anil Desai, and Bethan Wright. This is another film that thinks it's smarter than it is, with a cool setup that doesn't have much else to offer. There have been plenty of other better DNA-editing films made before.

Official Trailer for Horror Film 'The Voices' Starring Valerie Jane Parker
"You have the power to choose the spirit…" Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for The Voices, described as "this spring’s most unnerving new horror film." From filmmaker Nathaniel Nuon, The Voices already opened in Brazil last year but hasn't played at any festivals. Not to be confused with the other horror comedy The Voices from 2014 with Ryan Reynolds (which is worth a watch sometime). A young girl who grows up blind after losing her mother in an accident hears strange voices throughout her life. When she gets pregnant as an adult, she soon discovers her unborn baby has become a vessel a second chance for souls stuck in limbo to be re-born. Don't believe everything you hear. The horror film stars Valerie Jane Parker, Jenna Harvey, Jonathan Stoddard, Rezeta Veliu, Ashley Bell, Jordan Ladd, and Leslie Easterbrook. It looks rather campy and derivative, but gets super intense in the second half of this trailer.

Teaser Trailer for Indian Political Comedy 'Mandela' with Yogi Babu
"Cutting and shaving." Y Not Studios has released a first look teaser trailer for an upcoming Indian comedy titled Mandela, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Madonne Ashwin. This Tamil-language localized comedy is a commentary on politics in India, and very timely as satire about elections in the country. The film tells the story of a man who lands from overseas to vote in his tiny town, but is pulled up for suspicious identity. The name he gives to the authorities? Nelson Mandela. Ha. That explains the title! Early word is that the film, "will make you laugh, it will make you think. It will make you vote wisely…" Indian megastar Yogi Babu stars as Mr. "Mandela", along with Sangili Murugan, Sheela Rajkumar, and Kanna Ravi. I'm always happy to feature films from around the world, to get a taste of what cinema is like in different countries. Watch: Scary 7-Minute Adolescent Fear Horror Short 'The Nurturing'
"It's that perfect mixture of nurturing and pestering that I remember so well…" Never, ever look under the bed. You never know what might still be lurking under there… The Nurturing is a nice 7-minute horror short made by filmmaker Alex DiVincenzo, also known as the creator of Broke Horror Fan. "After an injury lands Daniel back in his childhood bedroom under the care of his loving mother, his adolescent fear returns to haunt him." The Nurturing features Anthony Gaudette, Marty Smith, and Hannah Fierman. This initially played as part of the virtual Nightstream Film Festival last year, and it's now available online. "I'm happy to make it available to everyone now, and I hope to get back on the festival circuit in person as soon as it's safe." Another slyly scary short that has made me never want to go near my childhood bed ever again.

Official Trailer for 'Disintegration Loops' Doc About William Basinski
"Trying to make something from nothing…" An early festival promo trailer has debuted for a documentary film titled Disintegration Loops, which is premiering at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival this week. The film is a 45-minute doc, directed by David Wexler, about the "avant-garde composer" William Basinski. It was made while they were quarantined in the midst of COVID-19. All of the interviews are shot on Zoom, interspersed with dramatically eerie shots of an almost empty NYC at the outset of the pandemic. Along with tons of archival footage. As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 looms near, Basinski contemplates the enduring legacy of his album "The Disintegration Loops" (his elegy to the 2001 Attacks) during the 2020 pandemic. This is yet another "made during the pandemic" creation, but I'm intrigued. Seems poetic and philosophical.

Full-Length Trailer for Spaceship Debauchery Sci-Fi Thriller 'Voyagers'
"You're not feeling what I'm feeling." Lionsgate has debuted a full-length official trailer for Voyagers, the latest from director Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist). This is such a kinky and wild premise - a bunch of perfect teens born on a spaceship go crazy with sensation once they realize they're being drugged to not have any feelings. A crew of astronauts on a multi-generational mission descend into paranoia and madness, not knowing what is real or not. The cast features Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead, Chanté Adams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Viveik Kalra, Archie Madekwe, Quintessa Swindell, Madison Hu, and Colin Farrell. "Get ready to have your ship rocked." From this trailer, this could turn out either awesome or terrible; and I'm hoping there's more to this than just kids going wild. Go for launch.
First Trailer for 'Miracle Fishing: Kidnapped Abroad' Documentary
"This is not a work of fiction." Discovery+ has debuted a trailer for a chilling, thrilling documentary called Miracle Fishing: Kidnapped Abroad, which will be streaming in a few weeks. Made by Miles Hargrove, the doc film follows the harrowing true story of his father's kidnapping by the Colombian FARC in 1994 (you may even recognize the story, as it was the inspiration for the 2000 film Proof of Life). Encouraged by his mother to film everything, Hargrove intimately captured the haunting and nerve-wracking moments as a small group of family and friends attempt to negotiate with the kidnappers and recover his father. Told entirely through firsthand archival footage from his old Video8 video diaries, Hargrove shares his family's story of strength and endurance amidst the unimaginable. What an intense pitch. This doc plays out in real time, "leaving you on the edge of your seat as each new demand of the kidnappers comes through." Whoa.

Kung Fu Friends Reunite Again Years Later in 'The Paper Tigers' Trailer
"When the hands cross… all will be revealed." Well Go USA has released an official trailer for a martial arts action comedy titled The Paper Tigers, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Quoc Bao Tran. This premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, then stopped by numerous other festivals in the fall including the Busan, Hawaii, and Asian American Film Festival. Three Kung Fu prodigies have grown into washed-up, middle-aged men, now one kick away from pulling their hamstrings. But when their master is murdered, they must juggle their dead-end jobs, dad duties, and old grudges to avenge his death. The film stars Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, Mykel Shannon Jenkins, Matthew Page, Andy Le, and Yuji Okumoto. This already looks like an indie cult classic!! Seems like a fun throwback and a clever Kung Fu dark comedy.
